obd reader

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

You haven't said if your car is petrol or diesel

As the advert states, it's diesels from 2004, and petrol from 2001

You could stick your vin into service box and it will tell you if your car is OBD compliant

Unfortunately, the answer is "maybe"

The problem with the 406 is that petrol models began to support ODB2 much earlier than HDis supported ODB2. XUD engines never supported ODB2.

From memory, I think this means petrol-engined cars from 2001 (i.e. when the COM2000 / fully multiplex wiring system was implemented) and HDi-engined cars from 2003. Don't take that as black and white though. Hopefully someone else will come along with some better info.

Non-ODB2-compliant 406s require the Lexxia interface and the Peugeot Planet 2000 diagnostics software (which requires a laptop (with a standard DB9 serial port) that runs Windows XP 32-bit). The genuine kit is very expensive, but most people just buy a "Chinese copy" of the kit from eBay. This is technically illegal stuff, but it's the only thing that does the job for some people.

The good thing about the Lexxia/PP2000 stuff is that it works on all 406s (and other Peugeot/Citroen cars, too).

Here's one on eBay:

Hope this helps.

The cheapest we've seen the hardware is around £86 bought from china direct
Probably the same equipment as in the ebay link but some people just prefer to buy from the U.K.

Hey, don't worry about it - it's an expensive bit of kit, the Lexia stuff. That £125 is more than 10% of the amount that some people spend on buying their 406s in the 1st place; it's an old car and that's a pricey item. Meanness has nothing to do with it.

Has anyone used the PP2000/Lexia in connection with a laptop running vista

Severly tempted again, although stumbling block is my laptop is running vista
I checked the link to the chinese clone and you're looking at £80 ish shipped, plus any duty "IF" customs is in fact tightening up

I also checked the bay, and there is a U.K. seller with stock for £89.99 plus £7.99 shipping, and it says at the bottom of the advert and I quote
PEUGEOT PLANET AND LEXIA SHOULD WORK ON WINDOWS 7 AND VISTA USING COMPATABILITY MODE
Don't really fancy the cost op top of finding an old laptop just for this

The alternative is to get a copy of VirtualBox (a virtual machine application).

Download it for free here: http://www.virtualbox.org/

Create a virtual PC with it, and install a copy of Windows XP.

Load up that VM and install the PP2000 software on it. Allow the VM access to your serial ports, and connect the cable up between your laptop and your car. Hey presto, the application is running in Windows XP and has access to your car.
