Air Con Compressor Not Kicking In

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

FarmerPug, one of the forum members. At one point he managed to seriously upset the BSI on his car while trying to fit some after-market lights in the footwells.

I didn't mean the current it passes, I mean the current of the relay coil itself. As you've replaced it with something similar (the same?) it should be happy but Doggy's idea of putting a relay outside the BSI in a socket might need some further thought. You don't want the BSI throwing a strop :?

The de-soldering is only 5 pins but they are medium gauge pins with one onto a ground plane so heat with a little primer solder wait 4 or 5 secs then soldersuck - be sure the pins wiggle freely in their holes before pulling anything off the PCB!!!!!
If any pin 'sticks' to the side of the PCB hole then apply a dry iron tip to the pin ONLY and and apply SLIGHT pressure to move it away from the stuck area - if this does not free the pin then repeat the primer solder above again...
Do not repeat the primer / suck any more than 3 times as there is a danger the heat will damage the PCB - call for help!

Your idea to break up the relay and attach flying leads will work but you still have to remove the vented area - do be careful not to get relay shrapnel into the BSI!!

Thanks for your help with this matter and if you or any of your mates want any soldering advice etc etc then send me a PM?

Well done, that man. 8)

I've done this kind of thing many times, but never frequently enough to feel 'proficient'. You're right though, 5 biggish pins through a single layer pcb can't be that hard, but it helps if you can see properly.....

It also occured to me that while unlikely, if you wound up changing it more than once, the socket idea is attractive.

Did you happen to notice what relay drivers it uses, or did you just go for a direct equivalent relay?

Hiya DogsLife,
The JSM xxx relay I used was mentioned in several forum responses so I bagged it as a safe bet...

Hiya SteveEarwig
I will double check the coil resistance against the one I took out but my guess they will both take several tens of milliamps...

Forgive us for all the questions - it's just we're terrified of hoooge BSI repair bills.

Hiya All,

I measured the coil resistance of the relay I removed from my BSI it was 185 gnohms and the new JSM1-12V-5 has a coil resistance of 225 gnohms so the current consumption will be less than the original part's.

Thankyou to Wifey for keeping the discarded part - not her usual form!!!

I don't mind questions .... except about my mental age

Cheers
