Radio Problems!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Radio Problems!

Post by DaveyRapier »

Hi all. Since I purchased my latest 406 the radio has never had any decent reception. If listening carefully in the right area there is very slight reception but still very poor. I took the headunit out and inspected it and the cable/plug, all seems fine. Then inspected the roof aerial to find it was slightly damaged, so purchased a new aerial mast and base mount (genuine parts) have just fitted them and it hasn't changed a thing!
Now I have no idea what to move onto next? Surely the aerial wiring couldnt be damaged, it also looks like a horrible job to replace. Anyone have any ideas on this? Is the aerial wiring earthed at any point on the car I could check it for corrosion?

Any help appreciated.

I also get this problem - I even installed an in-line booster and it made no difference.

I get terrible reception, for example talksport on AM is very faint and hard to hear, most the time i can only get radio 1 (or not as often 2-4) and local stations at at decent quality.

This isnt down to where I live so i can only imagine its because the headunit is crap (2002 HDI) - I wont be changing it but is frustrated me for years.

sounds like you guys do have an earth problem...

you can get aerials nowadays that have to be connected to a 12v supply and then earthed to body, you could try one of these . there not that expensive 8)

You don't know at what point its earthed on the body? Im gonna try an aftermarket headunit in mine and see if its my standard unit thats faulty.

Hi had the same problem myself took a while to find it though. The ariel on my car was leaking ever so slightly and the water was travelling up the inner core of the coax it eventually caused the inner core to snap. I wouldnt worry about replacing the coax its not a difficult job i replaced the ariel and the coax all in a dinner time at work.
Hope this helps matt

Just to update this in case anyone else is having the same problem. Stuck an alpine (after market) head unit in the car and bingo radio works perfectly :cheesy:
