I think i'm in shock!!!!!!!!!!
Took the family out today to meet up with my sister and her family as it was her husbands birthday and they were going Croughton Court at Alcester so tagged along
On the way back we decided to come back past Stratford and up the A46
As we were coming around Coventry I accelerated to overtake a car and the EML light came on, and there was no response from the engine
I lifted off the accelerator and the engine died
I tried to restart but turned over but wouldn't fire up
I coasted it to the next island and off so I could hear better
My first reaction was the fuel pump, and wanted it a bit quieter to be able to hear the pump
I turned the key and I could hear the pump so turned the key to start and it did
The EML light was still on, and I tried checking under the bonnet, but could see nothing
I decided to drive it back the 12-15mile back to home but keep it below 60
This is the first time in 5 years of ownership it has properly broke down (not counting the three times I accidentally I ran it out of fuel)
I think i'm genuinely in shock it has broken down for the first time
I'm thinking it's the fuel pump as struggling to think why a diesel should cut out whilst running when I have power ( electrical )
So after the £330 for the clutch, then it's looking like £120 for a pump, and guess the ARB bushes will have to be done if the tank needs to be dropped
You may think i'm jumping to conclusion, but in July when I serviced the car before going on holiday, I noticed metal fragments in the fuel filter housing, which I believe is a firm favourite for indicating the in tank pump is on it's way out is it not?
I think I mentioned on another thread about being reluctant to do the clutch on the car because I believed the next things to be done would be the pump and the ARB bushes

Re: I think i'm in shock!!!!!!!!!!
Technically after the engine is started it dosen't need the lift pump because the high pressure pump can draw it's own fuel. Sounds like you might need a new HP pump

Could also be the fuel pressure regulator. Get this out, clean it. If it persists then replace it. If the problem still happens then look into a new HP pump. Think you need to get the codes read personally.plod wrote:oh feck![]()

Not a clue on the 530d pump, can't see it being much less than a normal pump. You goto change all the belts, waterpump and tensioner too.

Not true. There is this believing that the low pressure pump only does its work for the first 5 seconds, but effectively it runs all the time when your engine is on.Bailes1992 wrote:Technically after the engine is started it dosen't need the lift pump because the high pressure pump can draw it's own fuel. Plad, you have an HDi right? I had the same exact problem. Exactly the same situation of yours. While overtaking etc.
Get to a garage and let them read the fault codes. In my case it was some "low pressure" warning. I thus replaced the pump with a Bosch one from ECP which works good. I did the job myself and it was easy to do, follow Haynes. It was my first ever job on a car.
You'll need new cap and seal from Peugeot directly, not much money, some £. It's important you buy the cap (the thing that keeps the seal in place) since you'll 100% destroy the old one while removing.
The substitution is done through the small hole unde right side rear seats. Cutting metal may be required: since the pump itself is almost a perfect fit you may need to make some space for your fingers. In my case it wasn't needed.
Also check injectors. I later found out that I had a faulty injector, I'm not so sure then the original fault can be traced to the pump. It may have been the injector leaking. Now that I've replaced both we'll never know.
By the way I've done at least 1000 miles with the faulty pump on. Never had a problem.
I still think that my fault was caused by the injector.
I'd say: if tghe car still does its job lovely, throw in a big bottle of diesel system cleaner and then try to reproduce the fault. If it does reproduce, investigate further. If it doesn't, just don't care.
I had to replace everything since I have a 10 month old and cannot afford to stay 2h in the highway waiting for the AA.

I wonder if it's worth replacing the fuel pump relay next to the ecu for sake of £15

Re: I think i'm in shock!!!!!!!!!!
The car now works, doesn't it? There is no reason whatsoever why a simple relay would fail because of a request of power (overtaking). And if it failed it'd just stop working completely.plod wrote:I wonder if it's worth replacing the fuel pump relay next to the ecu for sake of £15

I guess I'm just clutching at straws as know I really need codes reading
This is my first diesel and I've only experienced fuel problems on petrol cars and that was on 3 occasions
First was a pump failure
Second was damp in the fuel pump relay
Third was a bad earth on the fuel pump

A friendly garage would read codes for free. Or even get to a garage and tell them to diagnose the problem and that you'll be back but you need the car right now. The disappear.plod wrote:I guess I'm just clutching at straws as know I really need codes reading

Re: I think i'm in shock!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers mate
If I was to take you up on that, roughly where in Nottingham and how much?
I had a look around engine bay earlier to see if anything obvious but didn't spot anything
Started fine and drove to my parents house with no issues
When I got home yesterday I repeatedly stopped and started the car and once or twice the EML light flickered
Did same again this morning
Don't know if it means it's just something silly??
