"Electronic Ignition Fault"

Can anyone help please?

my 2000 HDI GTX 406 Estate started displaying this message sporadically over a few weeks, eventually giving up the ghost completely.

the car has been sat for about 4 months but now i want to get it running again. i have replaced the battery in the key fob (2 button variety, 1 large, 1 small) and fully charged the battery. the car started first time and was fine for the next 15 minutes i stopped and started the car about ten times to make sure it wasnt a fluke! i have now gone back to the car and it wont start (only about 3 hours later) displaying the same "Electronic Ignition Fualt" message. i have tried 're-learning' the key to the car a number of times but it is having none of it.

I dont really want to spend a lot of money on the car as it now isnt worth too much. i have bought a new battery for the car and that hasnt helped. Will a new key help?

any advice is very gratefully received!!

i reckon if it was something to do with the key you'd be getting "immobiliser fault". know anyone with a code reader?

I've a vague recollection of someone else's HDi, (welly)? giving this message. I think it was related to a failing car battery, but can't be sure.

Bsi, Reset might help perhaps,
or leaving the - lead off battery for abit,

The usual cause of this is a dead battery, however I've recently discovered a failed coolant temperature sensor can also cause this on mine

when i replaced the battery with a new one i dont think i left it disconnected for long enough to reset the system so ive just gone and disconnected it now and will reconnect when i leave to go home from work!!

Update for those that are interested...

OK, so leaving the battery disconnected didnt work!

I have managed to trace diesel all the way to the injectors so i know that the fuel pump is working, it just seems like there is something telling the injectors not to fire, i.e. the immobiliser.

i am going to have a new transponder key and re-programme of the immobiliser done this week in the hope that this will reset the immobiliser to a new key code. a bit of histoery as far as that goes, i bought the car second hand and got all the relevant documents from the first owner, including the credit card type woth the key code on it. when the car first started going wrong one of the first things someone tried to do was reprogramme the keys to the car. the only thing is they said that when the guy turned up it wasnt the code on the card and they had to contact Peugeot for another one.

so i now have a new key number and code and im wondering if somewhere along the line something has been done to the car, maybe before i owned it, and the immobiliser and code system have got all confused with one another!! hence, now im hoping that a completely new key and code will solve the problems...

When this happened on my HDi it was the Battery for sure, it was such an unusual message as Diesels don't really have 'Ignition'.

I'd be checking the alternators' output by measuring the voltage present at the battery, whilst cranking, and whilst running - you should see a consistent 14.6volts or similar at the battery with the engine running.

I don't really think the keys/immobilser have much to do with this.

the only problem i have is that the car wont start at all so i cant get it running for love nor money at the moment!

With the immobiliser aerial/key the usual message is "Engine anti-theft system defective".

A quick check to see if the bsi is reading the key via the transponder is to open the drivers door with key in the ignition, if you get the usual annoying bleeping then it is ok.
Your problem sounds similar to what I once had, take a look at this.
