very innacurate fuel gauge, whats at fault?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

very innacurate fuel gauge, whats at fault?

Post by grasmere59 »

My fuel gauge in my 2002 2.0 hdi 110 Rapier estate has a mind of it's own,it's always been a bit off but it's a lot worse of late. The other day when i parked it up it showed under 1/2 tank but when i got in the car in the morning it went up to 3/4,it stayed like that for days then i put £30 in and it never moved a jot,it has now stated to come down to 1/2 but i really have'nt got a clue how much is in it,any ideas whats at fault would it be the sender or the dash? :?

You didn't need to say it was an HDi 110, I got that from the fault - they're all like it, it's the sender but the sender is also part of the lift pump.

Do you reckon a new pump/sender would cure it or would it just go again?

Hopefully, I'm waiting for my pump to go before I find out.

My gauge in the last 90 HDi was like that before and after the new lift pump i put in, its just design flaw i think, some are good some are bad, lots of people have no issues what so ever with and some.................................. well you get the idea :(

Had imaginative fuel gauges in both my 406's latest has exact same fault as you. Always seems to be wrong at the top end of the scale though, so when it counts (am I running out or not) it does a good enough job

I've given to carrying a gallon in a can in the boot as on one occasion on the motorway it showed just under 1/2 a tank then all of the sudden the mfd came up "low fuel" and i had to go at a snails pace untill i reached the services,i thought it was strange though as i assumed the mfd would have taken the info from the fuel gauge but obviously not.
