Front Windows work - Back Dont!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Front Windows work - Back Dont!

Post by Pilch »

Got a D9 Rapier 2001 Estate - The front windows work fine - lights under the switches are on and the back ones dont work - No lights on.

There is a switch that disables them - checked that over seems to be working but dont know where else to go!

Fuses all seem ok.

Any idea's?

It does sound as though the override switch for the rear windows is faulty or the wiring to it; have you tried bypassing it?
When you disable the rear windows it does make the light in the switches turn off.

Have you got access to a Haynes manual mate? The circuit diagrams are pretty good. Failing that nip into Halfords and scribble a copy of the relevant page!
If you have a search there is a PDF version of the 406 D9 Haynes manual kicking about, don't ask me where though!

Would I be right in assuming that the lights in the switches at the back don't work, but the lights under the switches for the rear windows on the drivers panel do? & the rear windows do not work no matter which switches you use? Most likely culprit would probably be the driver's switch panel & the easiest way to check would be to plug them in to another panel (preferably one that is known to be working) & see if that solves the problem.

It's a shame you didn't notice until today - you would have probably driven past where I am on your way home with the car yesterday & would have been a 10 min job to whip my panel out & check it on your car.

The lights do work on the front ones but not on the rear. The switches in the rear are completely dead nadda - zip all with the disabling switch up or down...

Its annoying really - have stripped down the control unit - contacts seem to be connecting, unfortunately i cant find out what contacts i can bypass to test it!

I actually would of love to have stopped on the way through, but a 14 week german shepard pup that was desperate to get to her new home and food took priority!

Reckon that sounds like the disabling switch is at fault. The switches in the rear light up when they are enabled & don't when disabled, so that little button on the driver's panel pretty much cuts all power to the feed to that switch. Pretty sure somebody else had the same problem & while mine works, I can see how the switch could give up the ghost because it doesn't feel too solid.

Reckon another switch panel is your best bet. Bad news is that they seem to go for silly money. There is one fellow on Ebay that sells instructions on how to fix the panel for a £5. May be worth a go. A few minutes searching with the right search words on Google may even come up with a set of instructions for free.

Another possibility would be to have a bit of trial & error with the rear door cards off. You still haven't said if the rear windows themselves work off of the driver's switch. If they do, you may be able to have a fiddle with the wires in the rear door to get a live feed going to them that doesn't have to come through the disable switch on the driver's panel.

If you still haven't sorted it before the next time you're flying up the A303, give me a shout & you can pop round & test my switch panel in it.

Bit of googling found this....

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10285

In which HimBigChIef wrote this
Pin: Function:
1 +12V
2 N/S/F Window Down
3 +12V
4 Not used
5 +12V
6 N/S/R Window Up
7 O/S/R Window Up
8 Lock
9 O/S/F Window Down
10 N/S/F Window Up
11 Auto
12 O/S/F Window Up
13 N/S/R Window Down
14 O/S/R Window Down
15 Not used
16 +12V
So if 8 is the lock where would i run a lead to to bypass it?

Just so happens I have the EXACT same problem on my hdi saloon! At my wits end trying to fix it (amongst other problems ffs). Have replaced my switch panel with one from a scrap car that I tested to be working before removal. Still no joy. Hopefully this thread gives me answers.

Update -

Tried another switch panel - nothing.

A chap on the forum did try and message me out of thread -

try removeing pin 8 and see if that helps if not try adding a possitive feed to pin 8

But just looking for any other idea's!

I remember this on mine, if the rear windows have not been used much and the 'disable' switch has been left 'on' for too long then it sticks. I literally worked the life out of the switch on/off like a mad man and it sprang into life! honest!
