Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
LIsten, get a proper 406 and with the money you can save buy a 4x4 project small car which cost not much in tax and such.
Such a Jimny, a panda 4x4, a subaru justy, a ctroen ax. Why not?
406 + justy for example
It's more fun than a passat, it's more economical than a passat, those small 4x4s are hugely better offroad than a passat and are much cheaper to maintain than a passat (engines are more simple, you can work on it easily), the 406 is better on road than a passat, the 406 forum is better than the passat's (if there is one!), it's less boring than a passat.

Knocked 20% off the economy as my bro had a XR4i and he could get 25 mpg and I could only get 20mpg
Never changed the Tyres as such, just bought some Cosworth wheels instead

Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
I've just has a sniff around the VW website and found there is 3 types of 4-Motion system in use:
Haldex Clutch: (all 4-Motion cars) 90% to Front 10% to rear unless slip is detected.
Torsen Differential: used on the Phaeton, kinda 70/30 spilt but ultimately variable from a centre diff.
Lockable Centre Diff: used on the Touareg/Tiguan, has a low-range box and stuff like hill decent control etc.

...and id bet all those systems are weak in terms of longevity and at actually pulling the car, not to mention uber expensive when they go wrong.I've just has a sniff around the VW website and found there is 3 types of 4-Motion system in use:

Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
The 406 was fantastic in the snow the tyres on the front of my car have good grip.
4x4 is only really useful in an off roader if you want to get across muddy fields, or have plenty of grip over loose gravel.

Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
The 406 went even better on the snow than my clio which couldnt go up hills because it had no grip, the heavy diesel engine in the 406 must help the front wheels get more traction. The fiat was also great in the snow, it always got the grip to move forward, although it lacked a bit of the stability of a heavier car.lozz wrote:+1

Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
The astra Diesel is good in the snow too, the 1.7 diesels,
the peugeot and the astra is about the best ive found for use in snow,
worst car ive driven thru snow was the nissan serena, never again lol,

Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
if you think the serena is bad, there was the vanette, not the serena based one but the one before that which was like a toyota space star, my uncle had one, it was a death trap, too much power but almost no wheight over the back.
Snow is ok its easy enough to get used to, its the ice thats the tricky one.

Re: Passat 4motion TDi?
the serena was awful, i remember my uncles, it had one sliding door, and the packaging was diabolical. In the front middle there was a big engine box, and in the back there was a big box for the rear heater. And they were really loud, i think a serena is the best way to get the feeling a cat has when it climbs into the engine bay and the car starts driving.
