Thanks all again for the info.
Based on the replies here I decided to 'risk' it and between 22nd - 29th covered just over 1200 miles in total - 800 miles to Cornwall and back and about 400 whilst we were there. This included some pretty steep hills - 1 in 6 or 1 in 5 I think.
So as far as I can tell no problems with the clutch at all!
Mind you had to get the front brake pads replaced when we were down there as the warning light came on literally just as we arrived. Took it to the Peugeot dealer in Falmouth to check the brakes and fit new pads the very next day - it was great they could do it so quickly!

Re: Clutch pedal almost on floor today
So looking through this thread is the 406 clutch hydraulic and no clutch cable? On my old vectra it was the master cylinder that failed in the space of 30mins driving!

A 2003 hdi will have a hydraulic clutch. These things are almost impossible to bleed correctly if you don't know to jack the front end RIGHT up and keep the reservoir brimmed at all times. The slave cylinders are also a bit fragile, but only about £17 to replace (dealers are cheapest for these)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: Clutch pedal almost on floor today
If I do I am stuck in stop/start sort of traffic, the clutch pedal sometimes doesn't come up after a lot of gear changing but I got into a habit of regularly pulling it back up with my foot. Replaced the slave cylinder - no difference. Have the master cylinder but it has been in the drawer for 2 years. Seems a little space restricting to replace so I haven't bothered yet.

Re: Clutch pedal almost on floor today
A bit off thread but my other half has a 05 1.8 Focus and the clutch pedal needed lifting up every morning about an 1" or so then it would be fine for the rest of the day, this went on for 18 months or more then one day the pedal just went to the floor and stayed there. It turned out to be the slave cylinder which unfortunately is inside the gearbox! good old Ford. There was no signs of fluid leaks or loss, anyway had to change the slave and it had only done 40k from new,it's a possibility that your slave is on the way out.

Concentric slave cylinders are a common failing part on Ford and Vauxhall.

So do the petrol models have a hydraulic clutch set up too?
