Turn 45 degrees anti clockwise, pull really hard. Be patient, it'll take a lot of yanking, but it comes off eventually.

Re: Removing the gearknob
ooh a knob removal post, can I, can I , can I resist??
Stu you let him off far too easy, there is a multitude of innuendoes to go through first before we give out such privileged information.
so if you pull your knob really hard whilst continually trying to twist it off, after much sweating, swearing and hopefully the odd dash of spilt blood, maybe if you are lucky you will find relief with your knob coming off in your hand, thus allowing a sigh of relief to pass your lips, some say a post knob removal cuddle is in order, personally i just roll over and fall asleep.
Good luck and enjoy the time with your knob in your hand.

Pull. Pull hard. Swearing is required to get it off, of it just will resist whatever force applied to it. It's a mystery noone can explain.
That's what happened to me: when it came off I hit my face with it so hard I still have a small scar on the face. Be careful and wear a helmet.

Re: Removing the gearknob
Is the gear knob removal process the same for those of us who have the lift-select reverse? (i.e. the collar you have to lift up in order to be able to engage reverse gear?)
The Coupe has the lift-select reverse (complex knob), whereas my old saloon was a simple knob.

Re: Removing the gearknob
Not prepared to Google 'complex knob' while at work, but do let me know how it goes.
Oh, BTW as Odin's steed is now sporting two of my injectors, we can safely assume his is of the 'complex' variety.
carry on.......

I took some detailed pictures of the gearknob in my car:
