Re: speedometer wires
Hmm, I think you've got a better chance with a D8 but it'll still make a difference with what engine it has - the ML gearbox has an interface for the speedometer under the glovebox, the BE doesn't. It will all be analogue but I can't tell you much else as I only have wiring diagrams for later multiplex cars.
You could also try asking this over on the coupé club (www.peugeot406coupe.com) as some of them are keen on doing strange things with their engines... Don't forget to tell them which engine you have and the year

Re: speedometer wires
You are determined to keep your engine a secret
These might give you some ideas:
Peugeot 406
RGX (XU10J2CTE) ENGINE - BOSCH MULTIPOINT INJECTION MP3.2F - http://peugeot.mainspot.net/wiring406/index.shtml
P8C (XUD11BTECY/L1/L3) ENGINE - EPIC DIESEL INJECTION - http://peugeot.mainspot.net/wiring406/p8c.shtml
I realise you are not looking at a diesel but the XUD11 uses the same gearbox as the ES9J4 so has the same interface.
Also Peugeot do not believe in colour codes - they use numbers.

Hey, there's this new thing, it's called a "search engine", you can put words into it and it'll search for these words across the entire internet - neat huh?
Seriously, it apppears to be a replacement ecu with lots of capabilities.

Re: speedometer wires
Both sensors are on the gearbox. The speed sensor is accessed from underneath on top of the box where the right hand driveshaft goes in. It'll be covered by a fabric heat shield. The sensor responsible for RPM is accessed from under the bonnet and is located on top of the gearbox, slightly to the rear, where the gearbox meets the engine. It's a little black thing held in by a single 10mm bolt
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: speedometer wires
Possibly
RPM - 426
kph - 465
Looking at the XU diagram:
4210: tachometer (if separated).
4630: speedometer.
