Electric Cooling Fan

Hi

I have just been told by a garage that my Electric Cooling Fan is seized ( a common problem on the 406 !! )

Does anyone have any experience of this ?

Is it possible to remove it and lubricate it to get it working again ?

Service box shows it as part number 1253E4, but can't find a cheap version of this anywhere. Any ideas ?

I have a 406 2.0HDi 110 with RHZ engine

Nope, relays & control boxes packing up, brushes wearing out, bad connection but seizing? They made that one up :frown:

Is it really seized or is that bullshit for "dunno what it is, try changing the fan and see if that works"?

I think GSF do a fan but I've no idea if it's the right one for any 406.

Dahn the breaker's?

1253E4 - MOTOR-DRIVN FAN 350W - DW10ATED TURBO DIESEL AND 1 FAN 350W WITH BLADE
Also
1253E6 - 500W - DW10ATED TURBO DIESEL AND 1 FAN 450W WITH BLADE (Possibly for hot countries)

Both since RPO 09167 (Sat 15 Dec 2001), Housing 1308 Z4
Earlier cars also different housing (so I've no idea if it would fit)

1253E4 - MOTOR-DRIVN FAN 350W- TURBO DIESEL DW10TD AND WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING AND 1 FAN 350W WITH BLADE
350W - TURBO DIESEL DW10TD AND AIR CONDITIONING AND 1 FAN 350W WITH BLADE EXCEPT HOT COUNTRIES
Since RPO 09192 (Wen 9 Jan 2002), housing 1308Z3 (no intercooler?)

Hi

Just a quick update.

Took the grille off to have a look at the fan. OK, it needed a good push to make it rotate but it is by no means seized. Then soaked it in WD40.

Went for a run to get up to operating temp, 90 on the dial, and then let it idle for 15mins. The needle never moves off 90 and the fan doesn't run !! I went through last summer with no overheating problems !

Is it possible for the 406 to maintain its temp of 90 by water circulation only and doesn't need a fan, or do I investigate further ?

It's not so urgent with the weather heading towards winter but on a hot day stuck in traffic you might be in trouble. The fan also cools the air con condenser (if so equipped...)

Hi

Having spent sometime here reading about cooling fans, I have now done the following

1. Put the air con on full in the car, blowing cold. Fan does not spin, although with a slight push it tries.

2. Disconnected the temp sensor, expecting it then to spin. However, nothing except flashing stop light in car.

Any ideas on the next step or is it Dahn the breakers for a fan

With the temp sensor unplugged it should spin constantly, my next step would be to source a replacement fan from the breakers. they should turn with finger pressure so I would guess you have a bearing problem.

I'm not sure if it's a bearing gone stiff or the brushes worn out from the description - my D8's fans both wore out the brushes and required a push to get them going. I managed to replace the brushes, it was a lot of sodding about though and I'd head off to the breaker's first in your shoes.

It just occurred to me to check ebay - how much? :roll:

Btw that part number 1253E4 only matches the cars mentioned, it's not fitted to any other Pug or Citroen. Of course, this doesn't mean the motors will be different but I've no way of finding out :roll:

Hi

Found a guy on ebay breaking an identical model to mine, 2.0 HDi 110. However his VIN started 813 and mine starts 814.

It just shows how important " servicebox " is. The fan on his car was a 1250F8 500W whereas mine is a 1253E4 350W.

This limits the search considerably !!

Hi

Managed to find a fan which arrived this morning. Unfortunately, the wires have been cut on it.

There are 4 wires coming out of the fan. 2 thick being red and green/yellow, and 2 thin being grey and beige.

I wanted to test the fan before trying to fit. I have put 12v across the thick wires and nothing. I did the same again with thin wires connected together and still nothing

Any ideas most welcome !! :o

Can you read any numbers off the wires?

I had to replace my cooling fan due to it drawing too much current, the fuse marked below is the one serving the fan and may get warm etc. mine was pulling too much current and flagging the check engine light :roll: replaced the fan (£130.00 ish from Eurocraparts) and the problem went away.

The HDi will hardly ever get hot enough to call for the cooling fan but it is needed for the a/c.

Hi

I've just seen a reasonably priced fan on ebay, germany but it is the 450w 1253E6, not the 350w 1253E4 as fitted to my car.

Servicebox shows them as interchangeable in terms of size, however it will clearly draw more current. Will it be compatible with the ECU and will I have to increase the fuse size to accommodate the extra wattage

Any ideas ?

I wouldn't fit a fan rated at 30% more power, and I don't know why there's a 350/450watt either :?

There are loads of 406s in middle-eastern countries, and a fair few in various places around Africa. A fair number in Indonesia and Malaysia too. Some in Australia.

Therefore, I would assume a more powerful fan version would exist for 406s that were exported to hotter, drier countries, so they can move more air at a higher speed over the engine in an effort to cool it.

These fans are also required by the aircon system, which would make a more powerful fan even more essential - how else are you going to get 4 degree Celsius air blowing out of the vents when it's 30+ Celsius outside?
