Whiring and clicking noise from dash
Any ideas?
I have a whiring noise with the occassional click coming from the passenger side of my dash.
I have been told it is a common 406 problem but no idea what is making it.
Any repairs or is it terminal.
Thanks

The common problem is the flap to control the air circulation. I'm sure I saw a picture guide on here of how to disconnect it. This'll then give you permanent outside air coming into the car, and you won't be able to put it onto circulation if your behind a smelly car. Stops the clicking though.

That is correct, as I recall the mechanism for the flap is a bit weak with plastic gears and the likeneildavies wrote:The common problem is the flap to control the air circulation. Neil, when you said 'Smelly Car' it reminded me of the other day when I was following a G registered Audi 80 coupe, I could smell the un-catalised exhaust fumes which were really strong. Made me think about hown all cars used to be like this but we must have just got used to the smell of traffic fumes at the time?
These days you can't smell any fumes really, I remember when unleaded fuel and Catalysts came out in the early 90's everyone thought it would make cars slower etc but when you look at the volume of traffic now it was a very good step forward I think.

Help me out here lads, I've seen a really well diagrammed step by step guide of how to get to this part from under the bonnet.
It was in the last few weeks, but I can't remember if it was on here, or on the coupe forum. If it was on the coupe forum, I'll make a copy of the article and try to post it here.
From what i can gather, it's not repairable so you have to choose to disconnect it or fork out for a replacement.
Welton, from what I've seen, the smelly car thing isn't limted to older pre-cat cars. I've been behind loads of newish (late 90's and newer) that are burning oil like no-one's business. Also in my area, we've got a tip that's a bit wify, so recirculate is handy when passing that

Bear with me on this, I'm trying to copy from another forum. Also, there might be slight differences as it's the coupe, but it'll probably be the same, so here goes:
PS also, you can change the part for £35, details at the bottom.
From 406coupe forum:
I also have the annoying clicking/whirring coming from the glovebox area. I finally had enough of it today so I set about unplugging the recirculator motor - I took a few pictures which might be of some use to other members here.
Firstly, remove the scuttle panel under the passenger side windscreen wiper to remove the pollen filter

Check that the system is not in the recirculation mode - I think this is when you can see the heater blower below the removed pollen filter

Once this is done, remove the glovebox by taking out the two white nylon pegs which act as hinges. Behind this is a small inspection panel secured with a torx screw (I undid this with a flat bladed screcdriver from a leatherman though!)
Here is what the motor looks like for D8 models:

Once you have found the motor, simply follow the wire that comes out of it to the connector block and unplug it

And Hey Presto! No more clicking

For those that are willing to change the motor, parts4peugeot has them for 35 here http://www.parts4peugeot.com/acatalog/O ... s_187.html

Glad it'll come to some use.
Bear in mind that these are not my photos and I don't host them, so they could get taken away anytime. But the article is quite new, so it should be there for a while.
