Navigation CD ROM Unreadable

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Navigation CD ROM Unreadable

Post by exec406 »

Hi

I've been getting this message on and off, and now it seems to be all the time. I've cleaned the disc in the boot mounted unit many times so I doubt it's that.

Could this be the laser lens on the Sat Nav unit that needs cleaning? I think I will get a CD lens cleaner.

Strange thing is, this seems to have started happening after I had a permanent error message 'fuel cap open' start to appear (which I have had for about a month) I believe this is a sensor near the fuel cap that is faulty so I will need to book into main dealer to get this sorted. Anyone think this could be related to my Sat Nav issue?

Car is a D9 2003 Exec. saloon.

Thanks

If you take the SatNav unit out and take the top off then you can poke a cotton bud in far enough to clean the lens. This worked for me.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

I had this on and off, my disk had the odd scratch but wasn't that beaten up, the units seem quite sensitive. I copied the nav disk to a cdr and stuck that in and that fixed it.

Hi, thanks for that. Gave that a go, no joy so think it's dust on the laser lens or something else.

Cheers.

Completely unrelated - you have two irritating and common problems that affect 406s (mine included)

I never use the Sat Nav, it's just nice to have the street name displayed on the MFD. It's never worked properly since I bought the car; it works when it feels like it.

The fuel filler cap open message relates to one of two things - either one of the magnets on the fuel cap itself (not the door that covers the fuel cap) has fallen off (in which case, just get a new fuel cap), or the sensor that detects the presence of these magnets has failed (in which case, you need to replace the sensor). Mine has been on since December last year.

It's only going to cause an actual problem on 2.2 HDi cars (saloons and Coupes) where this has got something to do with the Diesel Particulate Filter (FAP) regeneration system. Apparently, if the fuel filler cap isn't closed properly, the system won't try to self-clean the FAP, and so the FAP eventually gets blocked and the car goes into "limp-home" mode. Removing the FAP element and remapping your car's ECU so the FAP system isn't needed any more will remove this as a problem, but won't cure the filler cap sensor issue - replacing the sensor is what you need to do.

OK thanks for that. I do have the 2.2hdi. Last year the main dealer said they changed a fuel tank related sensor, this was after the car was going into limp home mode a lot. Had the Eloys etc topped up at that time. I wasn't getting the 'fuel cap open' message however which I'm now getting. Back to the main dealer it looks like.

The main dealer also cleaned out the FAP filter doing the standard procedure (running at high revs constant for a time)

Not sure that will work in the nav box. The ones i've seen all have a tiny little brush glued to the surface a third of the way in. the idea being you skip to track x and it runs over the lazer. You cant skip to track x on a sat nav so the cotton bud is probably the best way to go.

one of them cans of pressurised air round the internals is great for getting the dust out, i have added the navigation box into my car (not much good as a sat nav, maps too out of date) but occasionally if i have the dogs in the boot or chopped sticks the dust quickly gets to work and i get thT message. but ive found one of the hair nets round the face of the drive stops new dust getting in.
