Clutch Change: Is it safe to start the engine?

Post by bytecode »

So, I've fitted the new clutch kit, (friction disc, pressure plate & release bearing),
I've got the gearbox into position, I've wiggled it with a driveshaft and it seemed to "mate" nicely.
I've done up the Engine-to-transmission bolts, the left hand mounting.
Would it be safe to start the engine to see whether there are any immediate squeal noises or problems before I fill up the transmission oil, attach the other driveshaft etc..

This is my first clutch change, so very wary - not sure what to expect.
Thank you.
Now if I can just fit the mods from "Taxi" http://tinyurl.com/3yug4g3

I can provide PP2000/Lexia 3 code reading/clearing in the East Cornwall/West Devon area.

NO! In a word!

If you want to see if the clutch works fasten the clutch cylinder on and get someone to press the clutch whilst you try to turn the driveshaft with the car in gear, if it turns with the clutch depressed you are fine.

Wait until you fit the driveshaft and oil before starting the engine.

Ah ok, thank you for the advice - I'm glad that I asked :)

Hurrah! I've done it! I have a new clutch and possibly, a working car :cheesy: Thank you to everyone that's helped me either with advice or even, with previous posts and KB articles. Thank you. :cheesy:

I finally lowered dear "Sydney" (Think of the Tetley character) to the ground, tightened stuff up and tested it - 1st gear, 2nd gear, reverse. I went about 100 metres and back.
Everything seemed ok, I was listening carefully, feeling for problems...

The only thing that I noticed was the noise of the accumulated rust on the drivers side brake disc. That's living near the sea for you though.

Are there a things that I need to pay particular attention to, signs of problems/errors that I may have made?
