HDI PERFORMANCE

i run a 99 hdi 90 which has been remapped,decatted and intercooler conversion from the 110 although the performance has much improved from standard its still falls short of the mondeo tdci 130 which we use at work am i expecting too much as the mondeo is a newer car with better technology or can anyone else suggest any extra performance mods cheers DP :?

After having a Mondeo 130 tdci while mine was being repaired (mine's 138bhp), I came to the conclusion that the mondeo feels (and probably is) faster becasue of the 6 speed box.

yeah i think the six speed box should make quite a difference due to the closer gearing but i felt the ford had much more of a kick from the turbo i guess this must be due to a larger turbo as the pug is a lot more progressive i wonder if i should have had it remapped after doing the intercooler conversion? ive heard about a MAF modification dont know much about this?

Your out of my territory talking about remapping, I've always been a bit iffy about it. But plenty have done it.

We considered adding an intercooler to a Nissan Primera, TDi, 90BHP at work.

By chance, we were at the NEC autosport show and we got talking to the Diesel Tuning Company that developed that rally Golf Diesel, you know the one everyone raved about, big power output, but I can't remember there name now.

Anyway, there Diesel 'guru' said if you add an intercooler to a non-intercooled Turbo Diesel the you MUST remap the fueling. To get the most from the additional Oxygen input due to the cooled, more dense air, the fuel map has to follow suit.

An intercooled 110 HDi will have a different fuel map to the 90, the chipped ECU usually mimicks the standard map but at a higher boost/fuel level.

Be worth speaking to the chip place for some advice.

I've sent you a PM with more detail, but basically bear in mind the power delivery/boost on the HDi is very linear, unlike the TDCi's we have at work which have quite a pronounced powerband. Your car will undoubtedly have a similar or slightly higher output, but it won't feel as lively because of this, although in actual fact it probably is.

As above, a remap is essential to really get the benefit.

Nice bit of work with the I/C BTW.

as i have said before, i have driven the new pug 136 HDi and that has loads of boost low down and really feels like you are moving, but in fact my 406 can keep up with it no ptoblems but feels so slow in comparison

yeah i agree i think that it doesnt feel quite as fast due to the power being a lot more progressive in comparison with the mondeo,your actually moving quicker than you think you are!!!! i once had to make a journey in the mondeo in snowy conditions and with the ferocity of the turbo made it hopeless to find grip!!!

Hi,

I think with the 406 pug changed it to make it more progressive, as i had a 309 DT which was like the mond... as it sent the power to the wheels in one big lump. i think it is like the new 407.

People complained about the 406 ride, so the 407 is much harder, although i and cannot see anything wrong with the 406 soft smooth ride. The same is true with the 407 and power, as it sends it to the wheels in one big lump.

Maybe it is because new hdi's have Over boost or called somthing like

I think that it is the gearing on the 406 which affects the way it 'feels'.

You never feel like your accelerating fast but take a look at the speedo and you soon see the rate of speed.

I had a go in a 55 reg Golf TDi 140BHP, 6 Speed and that felt very urgent through the gears, but a lot of changing required through the short rev band, again, overall it was just 'nippy' rather than the long legged power you get from the HDi (which is good for economy/cruising).
