Another electrical issue...MFD

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Another electrical issue...MFD

Post by dukey406 »

Does anyone know if there is a way to repair the MFD as it has vertical lines down the display making it hard to read?
Or alternatively is there anywhere to get a cheap replacement from? (Its the one with built in sat-nav)

They're notoriously difficult to get hold of. Last I heard, the going rate for a working one (as there are loads of faulty ones) was £80.

the last one to go on ebay went for £93 ish.
i find that keeping it on the negative mode prolongs the life, lines would go out on mine on normal mode, but negative hasn't done this.

You can subscribe to ebay email alerts, but they are generally not cheap unless the seller puts them on buy it now for a cheap price without knowing, the dealer price is about £300.

Alternativley you can put a type b display back into the car, it doesn't let the sat nav work and the trip computer isn't as good but it fills a blank space.

Thanks, does the type B unit still alert you of faults on the car etc and do you need to modify any wiring?
I'm not fussed about the sat-nav as it don't work anyways!
BTW - how do you put it in negative mode?

Thanks

The Type B display does display error messages, but its a bit ruder, it says AIRBAG FAULT, the type c displays says airbag system defective. But the b still shows the open doors, has a trip computer, and temperature, you don't need to modify the wiring, same plug is used. there may be an issue with the cd changer not working which happened when i upgraded from b to c but a quick change on the pp2000 sorted that. Im not sure if this is necessary on all cars.

To put the type c on negative mode, go to the menu, configure display, then set brightness, and select the reverse video mode, where the whole screen is filled except the text that you want to see, i noticed the lines were appearing sometimes on the normal mode, but on this reverse/negative mode there is no problems.
It would be great though if someone knew how these displays are made, its probably something simple to do with how the ribbons are mounted, and reattaching them correctly would probably solve the lines.

Thanks for that, I think it's a downgrade for the time being as it has started to go off altogether now :(.
The Sat/Nav can't read CD's anyways and the one on my phone is far better.
I'll have to hang on to the old unit just incase I can fix it (I'm an electronics engineer by trade).

it would be great if a solution was found, there is very little information available on google about repairing ribbon connections.
