Perhaps the COM2000 isn't so bad after all?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Perhaps the COM2000 isn't so bad after all?

Post by Doggy »

Just spotted this alarming story on the french 406 forum:
http://www.passion-406.com/forum/viewto ... rendre+feu
I have attempted to translate Google's franglais below:
406 owner wrote: Something very scary happened to me this afternoon.

Cruising at 65/70 on the motorway, in the third lane, I put the indicator on the right to return to the middle lane. After working properly, the flashing stopped and at the same time a kind of noise like pchhhh ... Pok! then nothing for 3 seconds, suddenly big plume of smoke coming out from behind the wheel between the wheel and the shroud above the stalk.

I blew it away, but it smoked even more, becoming white, thick and well-smoked, it stank of burning plastic, I try to blow harder, but it makes no difference.

I thought that I had to stop the car urgently, it was already on fire ...

I stopped on the emergency lane, hazard lights, I stop, nothing! It has smoked for about 30 seconds in all.
I did not have my torx key on me to open the shell behind the wheel, I thought at Neiman beam, so I cut off the air conditioner, the fan and the radio to take a minimum of power.
I left the highway, went home and I removed it to check, but found nothing.
So I took everything apart, nothing visible.
And by chance I turn to look under the steering wheel and the smell all of a sudden came back strongly, it came from the floor where I put the shroud, screws, and stalk.
I take the turn signal stalk in hand, ugh! smell of scorched 15 meters, I found the culprit!

On the outside it looked OK, but I think it's all melted inside, I fitted another stalk & disassembled the burned one understand.

(It's crazy good balls in any case, I saw already burning on the edge of the highway)?
Worth checking the link for the pics....
This guy's car is a 98 110 HDi saloon, so D8, I guess with about 200k (miles).

Pretty scary it could arc like that!
When I took the indicator stalk apart on mine the plastic guide channel for the cancelling mech had worn away so I reconstructed it with an araldite stirrer and said sticky stuff; they do tend to ping apart when you take the cover off!
