Fuel Gauge / Level Issue

Hi All

I feel like a bit of a traitor as sold the 406 this weekend but got a citroen xsara HDI 90 as wife is learning in its place and feel you guys seem to be more experienced than some on other forums. basically the proble is my fuel gauge reads as empty when i have say £20 of diesel in and only 3/4 full when its is full to the brim took out the low pressure pump and float seems ok and cannot see any issues with the connection on the float. anyone experienced the same issue.

Not quite but the Bosch HDis always seem to have fuel level issues, I can't remember anyone saying theirs reads 3/4 when it's full but it wouldn't surprise me.

Mine gradually drops to empty and, just as I'm thinking about filling it up, it suddenly reads half a tank It doesn't always do this, knowing my luck if I just ignored it and waited for the needle to go up to half way I'd run out.

I had an Hdi 90 Xsara before the 406. I got used to it's occasionally odd behaviour, mostly mine paid more attention to the level it sensed at startup & only grudgingly accepted that if it'd been parked on a hill the rediculous inital reading could eventually be adjusted to match reality.

The pump in the tank looks ok though i only had a brief look i have also read about resetting the bsi not sure how thats done or whether its a possible fix and begurdge buying a new pump would it be work taking it out completeky and move the float up and down to see if that moves the gauge

got a pump out of a hdi90[406] here if you want a spare if they are the same.

I have a Siemens HDi 90 (i.e., with priming bulb).
It shows about 5/6 when full.
It goes down to about half full after 200 miles, then stays there till about 400 miles.
When it comes warmer in spring it will spend a few months reading half a tank below what there actually is.

the Bsi reset procedure is pretty much simalar to the one for the 406 theres on on the kb on this forum.
itake it you have got the xsara and not a pic? pic needs tank removed to get at pump/float in tank

hi all well managed to cure it basically i too the pump out but didnt disconnect the battery i reconneced the wiring to the top of the pump whilst it was out of the tank i then sat the pump upright so that the float was down at its lowest turned on the ignition and it said empty as it should i then turned it on its side and lifted the pump to the height it would go when full and turned on the ignition and gauge showed full as it should i then disconnected the wiring and refitted everything and all is now good, thank you all for the help, im not sure if it reset something to make it read correectly
