I sold my old 528i to a mate of mine and he took it to well over 100k miles and it sounded as sweet as a nut when he sold it,i really don't think it is an issue with the big 6 cyl engines, the vanos(variable valve timing) units can get noisy so i have been told sometimes.

Facelift was actually late 2000. If you're crafty you can get hold of an X plate & avoid the more expensive emmissions based tax rates. The revised engines also included the 170bhp 2.2 in the 520i. I can testify that the performance is adequate & the economy can be "lived with".

When I drove Dad's 523i (2.5 170bhp 6 cylinder) from Bagshot to Andover we took the non-motorway route through Hook & Basingstoke & I had the computer showing 36mpg when we got home. The bad news is that round town, 20mpg is the best you can hope for without driving like a doddery old git.

Your right about the X reg's,the first facelifts have the early style steering wheel which i think changed from 51 onwards,i forgot about the 2.2's,you don't see many of them.Mine will do 30-32 on a run and about 22-25 round town and 18-20 towing the caravan hence the need of the 406!.The strangest thing with my bm is the faster you go the better it is on fuel,i get the best economy cruising 90-95 mph,i suppose the engine is just on song then,if i could tow the caravan at 70-75mph i would get more to the gallon than at 55mph. I think this is turning into a BMW forum!!bmwland is a good forum to do research into e39's.

Would'nt touch it with a barge pole unless you've a spare engine in your shed, the only reason your gonna get a blocked up pickup pipe is from a car that has'nt had regular oil changes,if a biggish bore pipe like that has blocked just imagine what the rest of the small oil ways/galleries are like.

I'd be inclined to agree. A trader will only get rid of a car dirt cheap like that if he knows he can't get it fixed cheap enough to sell on. Bearing in mind that traders would get discount rates at most garages & that the forecourt price of that would be £2500 minimum, you're looking at well over a grand to fix.

Now you're talking proper old school. My 2nd car was a 323i Auto one of these. W plate in blue & it had a 2.0 in it. My Dad was working in a garage with a BMW specialist & they had an old E21 320 with a rough chassis & body & they got the 323i auto with a knackered engine. Transplanted the 2.0 into the 323 & I ended up with a proper one-off - an E21 320i. Had the old 14ins BBS x-spokes & was great fun.
