My 53 plate 406 has done 344k to date on same engine and gearbox, had clutch replaced with solid flywheel at 135k, no problems other than
electrical!! but am used to that as I still have my 51 plate 406 that has only done 230k!!
wow skiman thats giving me hope that theres many more miles left in mine, mines a 53plate 406 coupe 2.2hdi and am just 24miles short of hitting 210k. It had done 180k of those in the first 5years of its life i've had it 2 1/2 years now and i hadnt had a problem until the dreaded fap problems kicked in but ive hopes that could get sorted soon.

Cant speak for the 2.2 as mine is 2.0 HDI 110 but other than a faulty fuel filter from the factors ( solved by fitting a genuine one) I have done nothing to the engine other than normal servicing.

I think the Peugeot theory is about 100,000miles interval but concensus is a bit lower nearing 60-72,000miles. One could argue that a decision could be made based on driving style (balls out acceleration regularly?), value of the car (not much) vs cost of job.
