How long to get HDi up to temperature?

Post by rwb »

How long does it take for a HDi (90) to get up to temperature?!

I drove 3 miles this morning before the temperature gauge got off the mark, and 5 miles before it got up to 70.

Does this sound normal? Or could the thermostat be sticking open?

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

depends a lot on the driving style and on which road you drive.
The first 3 miles of my usual journey are all slow downhill roads so it takes a while to get to temp. If it was an uphill road it's take much much less.
I try to keep the engine above 1600 rpm while the car's cold.

however more or less I think after 3 miles the water gauge is going to move from the lowest position, 5 miles and it is around 70, 6 miles around 90.

Oil temperature (which is the most important one) climbs up slower.

My mate's 306 HDi would take at least 10 minutes to get remotely warm. My mother's 306 DTurbo is much the same... De-icer needed ;)

On mine the engine's cold for a long time, but the air heats up after about 1 minute.

Well that's wrong, it should stay between 80 and 90.
90 is the temp at which the fans start spinning.

My water temp and oil temp according to the gauges run at 90 unless i'm working the engine a bit harder and then the oil temp will rise a little but the water seems to stay at a constant 90,my previous 110 was exactly the same.

the 1.9 td is the same. i changed all sensors and thermostat to still have the same prob..

altho my heaters blow luke warm after a few minutes . my new 1.9 hasnt been over 75 yet and thats even on motorway 27 mile journey ...

if heaters are working fine and its not overheating i wouldnt bother changing thermostat cos u will prob find it to be the same anyway

the actual gauge might just be slightly out,i have a spare dash pod and when i put it in my car the fuel gauge read a good 1/8th of the gauge higher than the other one and the car hadn't moved,i put the original pod back in and it read back as it was so i think it depends on the calibration of the gauges.
