new 406, lotsa problems
hi all,
i've recently bought myself a 1.9td 406 glx with 72k on it from a chap on ebay.
now i've driven the car for three days all the little issues with it have become apparent
-it jumps around on tickover (700-1200rpm) when cold, sounds like an old tractor "putt-puuuuutt-putt-putt-puuuutt"
-im getting 15-20mpg!! a little of this is down to my lead-foot but ive owned a 1.8td 205 in the past and was getting 35-40mpg driving it exactly the same, i know the extra weight and 100cc should make some difference but not 20mpg!!
-it wont move when cold unless you throw a good 1300rpm at it

Re: new 406, lotsa problems
the jumping around on idle could very well be that hes been running it on vegatable oil .. have you put any pump diesel in it yet ?
15-20mpg is very bad . probably half of what it should be doing ... are the tyres all around 34psi ? has it been serviced recently (and i dont mean the sellers word a seller will tell you what you want to hear but never beleive it)
this engine (have 2 myself) does sound like a tractor thats the damn best bit about it
1300 rpm . thats under in my view for setting off. give it a good rev wont do it no harm upto 2k.

Re: new 406, lotsa problems
i had to fill it up to get back from wales in it, would it need a few tank fulls to flush any vegetable oil through? the tyres are 34psi all round, he told me it was serviced just before the m.o.t 500miles ago but i'm gunna do it again just to be sure. i don't think this knock is meant to occur as it makes it a tad louder than any peugeot diesel ive seen and it fades after ticking over for 5 mins

dont worry about the veg oil if he did put sum in there . ive run my 406 on it before and it does it more good than harm.
i often pour new unused oil in , in the summer time only tho
were are you based ?

Chech the Maf sensor. Take it off-give a spray carb cleaner but be careful o the wire inside meter(delicate!).
Personally I wouldn't buy a car off eBay. Have u asked him if he ran it on veg oil?

thats a point . were is the maf sensr on a 1.9. i own 2 and never come across it.
whats wrong with buying a car from ebay ? i would buy any car from ebay so long as i view it before bidding. just got my 2nd 1.9 td from ebay and its mint . cleaner than my 1998 1.9 that ive had for 3 years now..

Just the distances involved. Just a pain to get to em mostly on eBay.
Should be just on the pipe coming from air filter box.

Re: new 406, lotsa problems
I never take any notice of the 'it's just had a full service' speech as it's usually a pack of lies, 4 litres of semi-synth (no need for performance lubricants it's not a ferrari), oil filter, diesel filter and a nice clean air filter won't break the bank (£30 for my last service) and well worth the piece of mind.
My 1.9 sounds like a bag of spanners first thing in the morning but by the time I've left it defrosting on tickover for 5 minutes it's a lot quieter (if you want silky smooth buy another car
)
Parked on the flat she should pull away with no revs, but don't dump the clutch or try it on a hill or it will stall. Remember 1st gear is simply a get you rolling gear, even red lining the bugger wont do much but burn fuel and probably break something.
In the cold weather I'm getting 30-32 MPG's from an engine rapidly approaching 176,000 miles so hopefully a service will double what you're getting now, do note however that the fuel gauge is usually pretty crap, I can have a quarter of a tank when I park up and be well in the red when I start her back up again.
Hopefully a service will make a big difference, if not check for fuel leaks or evidence the turbo actuator may have been tinkered with by someone looking for more performance, mine kicks in just over 2000rpm.

Re: new 406, lotsa problems
ive only ever driven diesels appart from a loaner astra off my bro before i bought this 406, with the cars i had before i never needed any revs (just let the clutch out gently and go) this will stutter if i try it and conk out as if i selected third or something, ive not looked at the actuator but you can feel the turbo kick in just over 2k. i cant do the service till the new years in,will update as soon as and let you all know if it has made any difference

Don't both looking for a MAF, the 1.9 never had one.
Check the usual stuff, filters, hoses, airleaks.

a maf sensor is a "mass air flow" sensor. but the 1.9 TD never had 1 ...
