New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
hello,
i have inherited a 1996 406 sedan (was an abandoned vehicle) and if i can get it running then i can keep it.
I am comfortable with most things but the lack of power to the fans/air con has got me stuck.
I have power to all other things but no fan or air-con, fuses look ok but i have no manual to be completely sure so going on info ive found on the web (anyone got an owners manual in PDF ??)
Im an englishman living in tropical australia so a fan would be useful - aircon even more so ! and of course there is no dealer here - infact there is only one garage and hes no electrical expert, so any help gratefully recieved.

Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
under the glovebox is the main connector for the power. i would check here 1st its common for the connector start to melt
its directly under the fan behind the glovebox ..
it will probably look like this or worse . it could be this or something else. but its worth checking here 1st as its easiest

and using some 30amp connector blocks is what mine looks like now

Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
As Gary said that connector block is a common failure, I have a chunky household connector block in mine.
If you still have problems take a trip to the breakers for a replacement, the resistor fitted to the motor would be the other thing to die. I changed mine for a motor from a 3 litre V6, it fixed the heater fault but strangely didn't give me V6 performance
Motor removal is a doddle, undo the 3 screws to drop the motor from it's housing and pull the brown block from the motor - job done in 2 minutes
Here in the UK they're easy enough to find in breakers yards, I paid £10 for a replacement, no idea how easy they are to find in Oz?

Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
ah thanks guys - ill check in the morning, everything else looked fine but didnt check on that side if the car, a new motor would probably be available but im 2000km away from a major city, so may have to ring around and get it shipped up if thats the case

Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
ok - the connector looks great - no fail there
cant check the motor - just waiting for a multimeter to arrive then i can do any checks - what do i need to look for to identify a faulty motor ?
the symptoms so far :-
no fan at all - the dash slider does nothing at all
press the a/c button and nothing - no indicator light
press the recirculate button - again nothing
all other electrics seem fine - but the skidding? indicator on the dash seems to be on now (wasnt yesterday and ive touched nothing other than look under the passenger dash for the fan connectors - related ???)
i wish i had a users manual - anyone have a pdf copy ??
currently 40degrees here so a fan / aircon is almost a necessesity

Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
I'm not sure about the fan issue but with reference to the aircon system, has it got gas in it? The a/c will not work if there is low/no gas pressure in the system even the light will not illuminate, there is a pressure switch in the gas line that if it detects low/no pressure will hold off the system and will not let the compressor cut in.Thinking about it though i don't think the a/c will operate either if the fan doesn't run.

Re manual for your car, there is a Haynes workshop manual torrent on the web that is easily downloadable.

I think there's only a D9 manual.D9406 wrote:Re manual for your car, there is a Haynes workshop manual torrent on the web that is easily downloadable.
Hold on a mo...
Just to get the bleedin' obvious out of the way, it is actually running now? None of this stuff'll work if the engine isn't running....if i can get it running...
Also the ignition switches on these can give problems, if you have no voltage to the fan see if wiggling the key around does anything.
I also have a fuse diagram for a 1996 that I lifted off of Passion406 (i.e. it's in French...) and this one says fuse 9 in the passenger fuse panel for climate (& interior light(s)), 21 for the compressor & control panel (and engine fan high speed & pressostat). If Lozz's don't do the business...

yeah mate,steve_earwig wrote:Do you mean handbooks? How many?
there all work shop manuals,
there on one big file, full library of cars not just peugeots, most probs 30 books in each file.
ive been working on finding somewhere on the net to dump them but its to bigger file,

Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
thanks guys,
the engine runs fine (just power steering issues to resolve- hole in cooling pipe - work in progress) but i drove the car to get it home so its running ok.
checked all fuses now w/ multimeter - and they are all good ( thanks for the fuse info)
the ignition is a possibility as i had to get the barrel off to get keys fitted - ill check.
ive managed to get a haynes manual - its missing the ref sections tho - but an owners manual would be good as haynes is a little too detailed and frankly overwhelming ! i need to grasp the basics first (what buttons do what/what lights mean what)
all other electricals work fine - only the fan/ac failing - how do i check for gas ?? or how can i test the fan motor ??
i have to say you guys are being very helpful - thanks heaps

Craig, use the site search facilicity at the top right, type in heater blower not working or heater fan and you will get lots of info on the heater fan problem.
To test the motor, remove it and put current across the fan terminals from a battery being very careful to keep your hands away from the blades.
If you do any tests on the car the engine needs to be running to test the heater circuits. The heater fan only works when the engine is running.
Re: New Owner - Fan/AirCon issues
hi there
i had a similar problem and found it to be a controller box underneath the dash the size of a cigarette packet cost about 70 pound unless you can get a 2nd hand one
