Help! Loads of issues?????

Hi all
After trying a replacement EGR valve, Engine Breather Pipes, IAT sensor the same cutting out problem persisted!
It died the other night and refused to restart, I got the car into a local garage after the men in Yellow rescued me.

The AA diagnosed a faulty EGR and IAT Sensor, both were done, car seemed fine for a few days.
But the dreaded 'Anti Pollution Fault' came back along with the Engine management light.

The garage diagnosed a 'fuel pressure regulator' which was fitted at a cost of over £310, but the car is now in a right state?

1. It wont idle and runs away at 2,500 rpm
2. The exhaust glows red hot!
3. Strong burning smell (electrical?)
4. White smoke for the exhaust!
5. The brake servo is not working!
6. The radiator cooling fan runs on for 15 mins after the car is turned off!!
7. MFD is flashing on and off but not displaying any info?

Certainly wasn't like that before - just the cutting out problem
They have diagnosed a faulty ECU - any thoughts

Could ALL these faults be caused by the ECU failing?

The previous owner replaced the Valve Solenoid, High Pressure Fuel Pump, various sensors, oxygen senor (lambda) I have also given it a full service?

Hoping and praying that the ECU hasn't gone at £730 + VAT the car is a right off

I would appreciate any advice on where to start looking as I certainly don't trust the garage

are the Rad fans coming on as soon as you put ign on?

if yes, disconect the Battery, (loom fault)

No mate what imeant was are you rad fans coming on when you put ign on?
if yes disconect the battery and leave it like that, possible loom fault, or Live meeting earth somewhere,
(if you can smell burning plastic get the battery lead off mate)

Where is the strong burning smell coming from?
inside the car or under the bonnet .

You wouid be best to have someone look over anywork the garage as done,
a ecu shouidnt get wiped out after jobs like youve had done somethings not right ring the garage and give em sh*t mate

ive had it happen to me, hence why isaid leave battery lead off,
ihad a £4k car wiped out in 3mins, insurers class it as electrical fire

disconnected, tried reconnecting, rad fans didn't come on.

engine revved up to 2,500 rpm +, exhaust started heating up......
engine sounded rough too........ normally a bit rattly these lumps but not that bad?

MFD flashing, burning smell didn't appear...

The brake servo not working and the engine cutting out may be related, you may have a leak on the inlet manifold/vacuum pipes, this would also explain your other running issues....personally I would be starting from here.....there may well be other issues relating to the electrics, but you need to start with the servo not working and cutting out issue.

Just be careful, if you smell plastic get the lead off,
in all honesty if it was me iwouid go back to the garage or who evers worked on it,
if the ecu was defective before they worked on it why wouid they carry on with completing other expensive repairs
dosent add up to me, but saying that ive only had 30mins sleep in the past two days so my heads in bits,

having looked on other threads on other sites, it seems to be pointing to the inlet manifold? excess air getting in etc....
The cutting out has now stopped, the opposite in fact just runs up to 2,500-3,000 rpm as soon as you start it.

Apprently to replace the 'Fuel Pressure Regulator' you need to takle out the inlet manifold?

But why would teh Brake Servo stop working????????

The brake servo is operated via a pipe that connects to the inlet manifold, this pipe could have become dislodged or broken/split/not connected up properly.

You would get a variation in revs and cutting out if the servo pipe/servo is leaking.

One quick check for an air leak at the inlet manifold is this....

Get some brake cleaner or carb cleaner and run the engine on tickover....spray the brake/carb cleaner around the inlet manifold especially where it joins the cylinder head....if you have an air leak the engine will suck in the brake/carb cleaner and speed up the engine.

KEEP THE BRAKE?CARB CLEANER AWAY FROM THE EXHAUST!!!!

Hi All

Firstly thanks for all the advice - spot on! and you were 90% right too

Eventually diagnosed as not only a faulty EGR and IAT Sensor but a Fuel Regulator, which was replaced £135 + VAT Peugeot Only)

BUT the problems that I was left with (Red Hot Exhaust, High Idle etc...) was down to a pipe clip that was broken on re-assembly and not replaced - £10 for Peugeot.
WAs on the short the Metalised Pipe that goes from the EGR to the Inlet Manifold, simple but very expensive mistake (for me £200) so I wil be going back to the 'other' garage for a rebate!

Fingers Crossed the problem is sorted, time wil tell certainly better than before I had these problems!

Moral of teh story is, use a decent garage who knows what they are doing qand are 100% honest!! and or get the problem diagnosed correctly (sure we all know that anyway)

I find it really hard these days to find tradesmen that I trust (not just garages, anything). With most trades theres always some shoddy workmanship or corner cutting that I'm not happy with and feel that I could have done a better job myself (of course it would take me 10 times longer!!). With garages I usually come away feeling that they're unable to diagnose faults correctly and are in fact bankrolling a troubleshooting exercise using my credit card! I had the fuel regulator changed when my HP pump was done, but even that was a bit of troubleshooting in that he'd diagnosed it down as far as the pump or the regulator but couldn't tell which was at fault. Of course, special order parts are on "no return" so after some discussion we decided to change the regulator first because it was the cheaper by far. The fault was, of course, the pump, so I ended up having both!
