Is it just me, or does that pulley look like it's been refurbed, like a service exchange part :?

The black bit of it just don't look 'new' somehow ?

And to 'throw in' a filter means the pulley stands you at £32.00 including the sellers profit.

Not sure myself, they are expensive for a good reason, usually.

DONT BUY THAT FROM EBAY, they is 2 diff types of crankshaft pulley for the 2.0 HDi, I've had mine replaced and was originally given the wrong pulley, even tho it was from the same make/model and yr as mine. You need to compare yours to the 1 you gonna buy very carefully as they is subtle differences and 1 will not fit the other.

I got one of these from this seller 2 weeks ago. Not sure if it's a refurb or not, looks well put together anyway. Fits fine and does its job, and the free oil filter is a bonus too.

Only had to get one because the old one disintegrated, threw debris behind the timing belt cover, caused the timing belt to jump a tooth thus destroying 7 out of the 8 rockers in the top of the engine. Lovely. And when it was getting sorted discovered the lift pump was knackered too. Bought the car for £800, cost another £600 to put everything right!

How does that pulley throw bits behind the cambelt cover then?

I thought that when the pulley seperates it throws the auxillary belt off, that can be dodgy if it gets rapped up with other pulley's and stuff trying to stop the engine rotating.

I only ask because I keep putting off doing mine, it only ever 'ticks' or makes a noise after a long fast run or when it's really cold in the morning, the ticking is a sign that it is worn of course, but I see no obvious signs yet of metal fatigue or bits coming off it.

The first sign was a very slight rattle at about 2000rpm, then a strip of metal appeared in the engine bay. The rattle came and went for about 2 weeks, then after a long blast to my girlfriend's house (about 40 miles) I turned the stereo down and heard a really nasty rumbling noise and noticed the alternator light kept flickering and the steering was occasionally very heavy.

The noise sounded like the clamp on the downpipe had fallen apart and the downpipe was rattling since the rattle got worse with engine speed. I drove the car for 2 days (stupid, yes) then it stopped altogether and wouldn't fire up again. When it was taken apart for investigation we found pieces of metal and rubber lodged in behind the timing belt cover. Had to replace the following due to damage:

Timing belt and tensioner
Alternator belt
Crankshaft pulley
Lift pump
8x rockers

Diagnosis alone cost £60, and labour was about 16 hours although my mate only charged me for about 4, which is nice.

So the moral of the story is if you hear a nasty rattle, stop the car immediately and get the pulley changed ASAP! Then it'll cost you £40 off ebay for a pulley and about £40 labour for a decent mechanic to fit it for you.

Eurocarparts have the HDI pully at £32.87 and £46.95 (+vat), personally id rather get one from there. Some chance of being able to return it if its not the right one!
