Hard-wiring satnav
as Peugeot decided to put the cigar lighter miles from the dashboard, I've bought a kit to hardwire my Garmin into the main loom. As I always fit it on the right side of windscreen I was hoping to find somewhere under the dash to connect the + and - wires to, such as the fuse box. this is on a 2001 rapier HDI. anyone had experience of this ? dosesn't need a lot of juice, couple of amps should do
Re: Hard-wiring satnav
what about geting one of those extension sockets for fag lighters.

Re: Hard-wiring satnav
i did this with my tomtom. we opened the power plug up and soldered 2 wires on the small circuit board. and scotch locked it to the 2 wires under center console.
dont forget you cant just cut the end off the sat nav plug and wire 2 wires up.. you need the circuit board inside the power plug ...
because the sat nav wont be 12 volt. it will be 5volt around. and the circuit board inside the power plug cuts it down before its fed to sat nav..
just unscrew the fag lighter power plug to your sat nav and check whats inside.

well it was a nice day so I've done it now. Found that the cable and box that came with the kit I bought was long enough for me to connect to the back of the fag lighter and run through the consol and up side of dash with just enough left to reach the sanav. It's on all the time it's plugged in and would have prefered for it to come on with ignition, but can't be arsed now, it'll do. Just to mention, you don't need to butcher the lead that comes with the satnav, these kits are available on fleabay and seem to work well

and I've still got the original lead to use in my other car

Re: Hard-wiring satnav
you havnt wired it correctly if its staying on constant ??
the fag lighter is switch live so it should go off when you remove the key

well, I was a little supprised myself that it stayed on, but there's only 3 wires, yellow, brown and purple, and I've wired into the yellow and the brown

Re: Hard-wiring satnav
IIRC the cigar light fuse has 2 possible postions in the fuse box, 1 for perm live and 1 for switched live. Cant remember the fuse number though.
Hope this helps

Re: Hard-wiring satnav
well, funny you should say that because as I was driving along today I thought about the fuse and its strange position.
As you look at the fuse box, it's in the second row down but is dropped one space as though it's between the rows, and I wondered if plugging it onto the third row but same place may be a choice. So you may have solved the puzzle, I'll give it a try when I get a chance.
There are some advantages to the socket being permanently live though. It was like that on my Volvo and was great to leave my phone on charge whilst parked up + you can leave a coolbox on to keep the tinnies nice and cold. Would be good to confirm it anyway, then we'll all know the trick eh
cheers chaps

Re: Hard-wiring satnav
Just to update the situation re the fuse.
I tried dropping the fuse down level with the bottom row and hey presto it now works only when the ignition is on. Move it back up half a space and it's on permanently
