Currently at a tad under 210,000 miles. Just had the cambelt, idler, tensioner, waterpump, plugs and thermostat done by KrisB.spinus wrote:whats your mileage bud and what do i need to look out for?jonsowman wrote:HelloMy 2.1TD is fantastic, truly excellent car, I hope yours serves you just as well.
The aux belt tensioners are known for failing and throwing the belt off, which usually goes through the cambelt cover and takes off the timing belt. This happened to mine but luckily the engine was only idling and the aux belt came off without touching the timing belt.
The speed sensor on the ML5T box is known for going weird -- if you notice your speedo jumping around all over the place this is probably what's gone wrong. The other suspect is dry solder joints on the instrument panel.
Both front coil springs have been replaced since they both failed.
Mine's got a small coolant leak from the rad/bottom hose joint -- the connector rusts and falls apart causing a leak. The bottom hose is a dealer only part and is quite expensive, I'm on the lookout for a replacement.
Other than that this has been a truly reliable car over the 180k miles of ownership

which alters with revs not speed.
i,m wondering if either cam belt or aux belt or w pump .
either way i,ll be doing them all over the next week or so but what a lovely car to drive!
Re: newbie
Yeah that could be any of the things you mentioned, I would suspect the aux belt tensioner/idler too. Anyway you can check everything whilst you've got the belts off. Check the PAS pump, alternator, AC compressor etc too for any rotational friction. If they've never been changed, I would be tempted to replace the aux belt tensioner and idler when you replace the belts. The last thing you want is for the tensioner to throw the aux belt off and take the timing belt with it!spinus wrote:funny you should mention idlers, when driving everything is perfect but i,m sure i can hear a a dry bearing type noise
