Re: best diesel
1.9/2.1 for simplicity.
HDi for everything else.
Loved the bulletproof feel of my XUD.

Re: best diesel
How long is a piece of string?
This also kind of begs the D8/D9/multiplex question.
I have a HDi and I love it.
It's much quieter and feels more powerful than the 1.9, and (with the possible exception of the Exec) the trim levels on the D9s are generally nicer.
I also think the D9 exterior is nicer, especially the back on the saloon and the honeycomb grille at the front. The front bumper where the fog lights are is better on the D8 though.
However, if I was buying another 406 then it would be another 1.9 -- with veg oil in mind. I think the electronics on the HDi are a liability as it gets older, and my general feeling is that the electronics are temperamental. The warning messages (which are now MOT failures) when nothing is in fact wrong are embarrassing.
And there's nothing like the sound of an XUD on a cold morning.
Although: if you're not going to be using veg oil, then what's the point having a 1.9?

Re: best diesel
i would choose xud over hdi anyday . i recently bought a new d8 xud . i was gonna buy a hdi untill i came across all the faults that come with them . ye its a good diesel engine but i viewed 3 hdi's when i was buying a new car to which all 3 had "anti pollution fault" . seriously high bighting points on the clutches. then theres the in tank pump which always seems to knack up . then the com2000 (on the later models).rwb wrote:enlighten me
the list goes on and on (more than enough info on the forum)
dual mass flywheel . Diesel partical filter ..
then theres the bottom engine mount which the hdi seems to chew through in no time ...
and power. the hdi 110 is not far in front of my xud. i drove 2 110s when i was buying one and my xud pulled stronger and quicker than both of them. wont even mention the hdi 90 i test drove that was slower than slow
the xud is by far the best diesel engine in a 406 . FACT

the xud often gets refaired to as "bomb or bullet proof"
never heard any1 say that bout a HDi

Re: best diesel
if you want to go slow and have good mpg then its a 1.9
if you want to go fast, chance of lots of proplems, good mpg then its a hdi
if you want to go quicker than a 1.9 less proplems than a hdi and quite good mpg then its the2.1

Re: best diesel
I think that's a bit misleading about the HDi.
It is true, though, that you need a code reader -- a cheap one that shows only the code will do now that we have the list of doom. My latest "engine anti-pollution system defective" was a duff throttle position sensor (code P0221: Throttle/Petal Position Sensor/Switch B Circuit Range/Performance Problem) and it was a cheap fix.
Now you see I'd swear my HDi 90 is much faster than my XUD 1.9 was. I think we need to line up a HDi 90 and an XUD 1.9... to settle this
