The problem with this debate is that everybody will compare engines that they've driven & diesel engines can vary so much from how they've been run.

The first time I drove a 1.9 it was in a 405 & felt gutless, but when I got my own 405 1.9 it was quick as hell.

My old Xantia HDi felt fairly quick, but the old 1.9TD Xantia that my Mum's boss had felt much gruntier from low down.

The 2.1TDs that I've driven in 406s & 605s were the same - all felt much quicker than my current 110 HDi. In all honesty, my preferred 406 would be a 2.1TD GLX or Exec. The only reason I had to get an HDi is because my private plate can only go on a vehicle newer than 2000.

It is when you consider that you rarely find 2 diesel engines that will drive the same. So much can depend on how well it's been run in & what it has spent its life doing.

When I did multidrop back in 2000 we all got brand new Merc Sprinters. Our old 312D Sprinters were replaced by 310s which were supposed to be slower. We were all given strict instructions not to go over 60 for the first week, which we all stuck to. The difference was that the other 5 drivers ragged it up to 60 while I was fairly easy on the revs through the gears for the week. Week 2, I was only going a little bit harder on my engine while the rest just went back to business as usual. Think it was about a month before I started giving it any serious stick.

3 months later & everybody wondered why my van was so much quicker (& cleaner) than theirs were...

you might be waiting a while for some issue's to pop up with the 2.1 .

as i say up post the xud often gets refaired to as "bomb or bullet proof"

they dont often go wrong. 8)

nope they dont do manual leather but i have leather trim that i retro fitted

its very easy 8)

if you do buy a leather trim make sure its the smooth type and not the bumpy type. i will post pics if you dont know what i mean

smooth was only fitted in d8s. so you may get sellers telling you it will fit but it wont without a few mods
the front seats fit in no problem both d8 and d9 are same fittings
but the back are different . the mechanism for folding rear seats down.

if you buy a d9 leather you need to use your original metal bases for the rear seats back rest section .

I think so, but it wouldn't be too much of a problem to get electric in there, my poverty spec 2.1 even had the wiring.

Had 2 ZX diesels.

1.9 XUD which I ran from 70k to 120k, and a 1.9 XUDT which I ran from 180 to 190k.

Both bulletproof, economical, though the XUD seemed to eat glowplugs (I suspect the garage only changed 2 or 3 the first time as they are awkward to get at!)

My HDi never ran right, needed MAF, clutch pedal sensor, fuel filter housing, the mounts caused it to lurch about.

Definitely XUD was the better engine. Even the likes of Toyota fitted it to their corolla, and Honda had it in their Concerto TD (which itself was literally a rebadged R8 200).
