funny u should mention sky. ive just had 3 boxes (HD) fitted in all 3 bedrooms upstairs. the fitter said that all my 4 boxes in my house must be connected to a live phone line. (this just tells sky that the boxes are at your house cos if there not you could be renting one to your mates and sky wont have a clue were the box is)

anyway when he went my phone had no dial tone so i rang them up and the person on the phone said unplug the boxes from the phone line and then try

well when i did my phone now worked. and they told me over the phone that i do not need my tv boxes plugged into the phone line.

the only reason a phone line is needed is to tell sky were the box is...

cos like me who has 4 boxes in my house with every channel on. if i was to take 1 box to another house and plug it to a dish it would work. so i could rent it out without sky knowing

ijust presumed the phone line was needed to Marry up the viewing card,
dont they Beam some sort of software down a phone line for that,?

This Vm is good but you get all these channels of freeview for nothink bit of a con realy,
sky seems to offer abit more, ionly want 1 extra channel and vm are not alowed to broadcast it :(

strange that was as one of there engineers had spent 2hours wiring the whole thing up,

ive heard they back out of a contract if theres no phone line,
iwill try again and see,

If you don't have multi room the phone line isn't a big deal, but having multi room is.

I had a fault with my upstairs phone line but didn't know until I got a letter from Sky telling me to connect the phone line or pay a large surcharge as per the multi room contract.
Apparently Sky check the phone line by auto dialling.

When we go on holiday in our caravan i take our sky box and card with us with a portable sat dish and we have no phone line in the caravan! I disconnected my phone line to the skybox at home over 8 years ago due to a line fault and sky have never been on to me and frankly if they did i'd tell them where to stuff there mothly subscription from me.

you do not need a live phone line to watch sky tv. i didn't have a line when i had sky installed. the only thing the line is used for is the interactive services, like ordering pay per view movies(if you dont have the movie package)etc i've cancelled my subscription coz the only channels that are ever on are terrestial channels, so i'm just getting freesat thru the existing dish and box.
also when the 12month contract is up the dish and set top box are your property.we are looking at moving house and the dish and box will be coming with me

Thanks all,
We are just going to order it, if they carnt set the system up 100% withought a phone line, iwill just pull the plug on the Direct debits, Then that will leave me with Free-sat,
ive done abit of Research, they carnt hold Me to a 12mth contract if they carnt provide the service they offer/sell,
so alls well there, nothing to loose,

Have sky, have a phone line but its not connected as it's in a different part of the house.

Sky don't seem to care. Only time they used the phone line was phoning me trying to sell me protection insurance!

There are rumours that some people take the cards for different regions (eg. NI with the extra RTE channels for Irish in England) or even have huge dishes in Spain watching Sky!

Only time they seem to enforce the phone line is when you are on multiroom, just so the boxes can phone home occasionally that they are all in the one location.

even with multiroom there not really to bothered. i had a fault with my landline telephone other day. so i unplugged all 4 sky boxes from the filter and the telephone worked.

i rang sky and told them about it. their reply was "we'll put a note on your account just leave them unplugged sir" so whats that tell ya

No need for a phone line for Sky unless it's multi-room, else you get a letter.
