I had that on my 1999 saloon - D9, written in glossy black text on a matt black background, so you don't see it unless you look closely.

I wonder if that's there on HDis with white dials?

Never noticed it for sure. Is it there on D8s?

Would normally say D9 15m or D9 16m - depending on how high the speedo goes. 15m = 150mph, 16m = 160mph. Never noticed anything like it on a D8, but the clocks on D8s were made by a different manufacturer. If memory serves, D8s are Sagem & D9s are VDO Dayton.

yep D9s are VDO and mine tells 25k=250km/h

No, you're not thick - this is all confusing to those who have only recently got a 406 (like myself).

Yours is a D8, which is another way of saying it's a Mk.1 model. Yours will have a slatted grill on the front, on either side of the heraldic lion badge. These were produced up until 1999.

The D9, like mine, is the Mk.2 model. It has a meshed grill on the front, on either side of the heraldic lion badge. These were produced from late 1999 to 2005, when 406 production was ceased in favour of the new 407.

There are other differences, but that's the big one that you'll notice first.

The Coupe also has a D8 and D9 version, but the differences are a lot more subtle (i.e. the D8, apparently, doesn't have a high-level brake light, but the D9 does). Not much else visually different - and that's probably a good thing, because it's always been a gorgeous design

Can anyone confirm this please. I have bought a peugeot 406 coupé recently and it has the high-level brake light mounted on the back windshield. Does this make my car a d9?.

It may be a D8.5, a mix of the two.
Check what kind of dash do you have - D8 and D9 as has been said in this forum are very different. You can also have a look at pug406.com (thanks for all the efforts highlander) for some pics.

I've seen a lot referring to a 406 break, some one please explain just WTF this is?

P.s -- I have googled it, and all I find is 406's that are being broken very distressed reading......
