Cefn Mawr pronunciation

How do you say, in English, 'Cefn Mawr'?

Looks like I might get another Tesco project there.

We've been working on Tesco Ponty Pridd too which aint too far from some of you Welshman on here?

I missed out on the Ystradgynlais one last October, are Tesco taking over the whole of Wales?

Sam's on the right lines but he speaks M4 corridor Wenglish, which no-one else in Wales can understand, they add whole syllables that don't exist just for effect!! I speak proper valleys Wenglish (if you want a laugh, look up the "Talk Tidy" books by John Edwards), and I wouldn't quite have said it like that....

Cefn is like "Kevin" without the i, so "Kevn", and Mawr, well the best way to sound that out is to pronounce "Maw" sounding like "Bow" (Bough, like bow of a ship, not like "and arrow!!") then add the "r" (remember to roll your "r"s)... Both words are single syllable

I'd love to hear how you manage Ystradgynlais and Pontypridd

By the way, the Pontypridd store (known locally as Tesco Upper Boat after one of the locales - might be easier for you to pronounce ) is less than a mile from my office, often get lunch from that one...

We were Sub-sub contracted carrying out specialist works on the Roof, I'd rather not give the name cos we haven't been back to finish yet but the Client thinks we have

To be fair the Supermarkets have been keeping us going recently, they do move in areas though - the last batch of Tescos we did were in Kent

Pontypridd, as Sam says, is Pont-ee-preeth (pree as in pre (before), soft "th" as in "the", "this", "that" etc, not as in "bath") although I still think you'll impress the locals more if you start calling it "Upper Boat"

if you think Welsh is hard to pronounce hows about Kirkcudbrightshire the locals laughed theyre heads off when i pronounced it

I remember going into a petrol station in Edinburgh and asking directions for Kirkcaldy and I said it as it looks and getting a blank reply

Scottish is the opposite of Welsh, we usually overpronounce every letter in our words unlike the Scots who miss whole chunks out... Just ask anyone from Kurcoddy or Kurkoobreeshar

Kirkcaldy was kirkawdy, Gallatown gawton, and Auchtermuchty ocktermuckty. Americans used to call Edinburgh "Eden-berg".

Ireland has a fair few, Port Laois and Dun Laoghaire spring to mind! Loughs are locks and not "luff" (as Loughborough is pronounced).

That Fiona bint off GMTV annoyed me one day as she pronounced Newtownards (newton ards) as "New Tannards".
