XUD's do eat glowplugs because they are needed.

You can have just as many problems with an XUD as you can a HDi, all about finding a good one. Unfortunatley due to the nature of the engine a HDi will always be more expensive to insure.

I think the HDi's characteristics get misunderstood. They don't feel as quick as the old 1.9td's and 2.1td's but the power is delivered differently, you only need to glance at the speedo on a HDi to see what's really going on. They won't be rushed either so flooring the throttle will do nothing, you need to work with the engine for best results.

My old 605 2.1td had a nice surge of boost towards 3000+ rpm if I remember but I wouldn't say it was 'quicker' than a 110HDi in real terms.

The HDi felt a bit quicker than the XUDs ever did, even though it was only a 90!

Though the XUDT did benefit from the turbocharger, that wee ZX flew!

The one without a turbo you learnt to drive it to build mementum, such as on a country road, accelerate downhill to get back uphill again! :)

In terms of economy, the XUDs returned close to 50mph, the HDi struggled to return more than 40.

In terms of reliability, I still maintain the XUD was the more rugged engine. I think PSA took on too much too soon, the HDi is too complex. Though in fairness I do suspect that my 406 was a bit of an abused example, while the 1st ZX was ex-motability via my uncle and the 2nd estate was from a surfer dude friend-of-a-friend :)

My HDi had been used for what I call "extreme caravanning" in which the owner would have used the 406 to pull an unfeasibly large home-on-wheels half the way around the freaking planet with the a/c on full blast whilst straining the engine mountings and clutch mechanism, then, when the car is shagged out; remove the majority of the towing fitments and pass the car off as a one-owner special at an inflated price car mini-mart for Mr Welly to drool over, take away, later find remains of towing equipment underneath, worry and begin to find the car's faults one-by-one

What is the best current diesel on the market?

The TDi fitted to Skodas is the taxi drivers favourite. But in Golfs these eat turbos, MAFs and ESP sensors.
The Honda CDTi had real issues in the Accord.
Vauxhalls diesels don't have a good history.
The old man's Nissan diesel blew in his Navara.

What about the Toyota D4D? Any good?

That was my experience too, even though the XUD is officially quicker to 60.
I'd like to see the power and torque curves side by side.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

The Lancers these days have a VW TDi engine.

The old man once had a Mitsubishi van with a 2.5 diesel engine, seemed to be a good wee workhorse. Not sure of the origin of the engine.

Always thought Protons were underrated, being based on Mitsubishis.

Used to service my XUD every 5k miles / 6 months or so.

Basically once in the autumn and once in the spring.

I know someone selling a 2.1 XUD off of an Xantia
