Is it just my HDi that does this?
In third gear let the car rest at 1500rpm (turn the air con/fans and radio off) then accelerate lightly until 2000rpm when you hear the whistle of the turbo kick in (maybe just before) also try in 2nd and 4th.
In between the 1500rpm and 2000 I can hear a slight rattle (or what I would call a diesel rattle) is this normal or is car f*cked? After 2000 rpm I cannot hear it (maybe because of the turbo whistling away)
Any ideas
Thanks,
Andy
Note: I have tried this while the car is idling and cannot hear the same noise, also tried it with the window open and cannot hear it.
EDIT: INSTEAD OF 1500 TRY FROM 1000

hi,
i think you are talking about a different thing, if yours Is like the sound of hitting metal cans together quickly then your problem is where the exhaust meets the engine, the bracket has some springs to hold it on ( as my mech told me) you can get a repair kit from pug to repair this.
Mine is only present when accelerating (moderately/lightly) from 1000rpm to 2000rpm never on idle or stopping/staring the engine, and is like the sound of the old diesel engine rattle (when cold) as to a metal knocking noise.
Andy
EDIT: on re-reading your problem maybe the same, i have no idea what it is unless it is the sound of the good old desiel engine before the turbo gives it a kick up the arse.

could be injector knock, does it sound like loud pinking?
FAQ - 406 D8 petrol (excl. V6) running and starting problemsPeugeot wrote:what are you worried about? we made car that lasted 10 years"..."Zat is very goode non?
no i don't think so, and it tends to go away when you get past 2000rpm. also if it was i would hear it reving the engine on the drive.could be injector knock, does it sound like loud pinking?
if it is i will live with it as i ain't getting a set of new/used injectors (as the used may have the same problem and the new cost a tonne of money - if it cost more the £300 fix i will sell then get a new car)

He he
I am laughing here because my HDi does it.
Mine occurs 'through' 2000 RPM whilst accelerating and again cannot be reproduced on the ground.
I call it like a loose rattle, or a Diesel 'clattering' the other car I test drove did it aswell.
I FIRMLY believe it is a characteristic sound of a Common Rail enigine, listen for a modern Vauxhall or VW, the all sound well clattery, in fact the HDi is pretty quiet in comparison.

Hi,
It could be, my mechanic thinks it is just the sound the common rail make at that engine speed but I am making him check it over for me.
If all 4 of use try and find out what it is, we will surly get an answer, although I think it is just a noise it makes as I heard a new ford and vw diesel pass me on the way to the pub and on slowing for the speed bumps and then accelerating I am sure I could hear a similar noise.

HI,
I have only had mine 3 months, so hopefully it will be ok. Just used the car to carry 2 kayaks I have to say out of all the cars I have had/driven I love the 406. Carrying my boats had not effect on performance or handling.
I still think it is one of the nicest looking saloon cars out at the moment, I prefer the look of the 406 over the 407.
Just hope my rattle turns out to be nothing
