Xbox issue

Post by trem1 »

Can anyone wiser than me help with an issue were having with my youngest son's xbox. He had an xbox with a 60HDD and 'santa'
bought him a new 360 slim with 250 internal HDD.
Now thinking it was gonna be easy to transfer the data from one to another we bought a transfer cable from ebay BUT the xbox doesnt recognize the cable etc like it shows on youtube etc.
It apparently needs the info transfering to a pc.
how does that work and how would i get the info back off pc and onto new xbox??

OR does anyone have a proper cable to transfer from xbox to xbox direct that i could borrow/buy.

The cheapest i can buy the 'proper' cable for for £15 which seems a bit steep when its only gonna be used once

Transferring Data Using a USB Thumb drive

The second method of transferring old xbox 360 HDD data to a new Xbox 360 slim console may be more time-consuming. If you have only a little data (or are willing to download previous purchased content on the new Xbox 360 from Xbox Live!) you can save a lot of time using a USB thumb drive.

If you can connect both systems to the same TV and switch between inputs it will make this process a lot faster. Both consoles need to work for this method to succeed. Before using your USB thumb drive you will need to set it up for the Xbox 360.

Head to the memory area in system settings.
Select your USB Device
Choose from Configure Now (Format and Configure the Full Device), or Customize (you can choose how much memory you want configured for Xbox360 from the free space on the device.)
Save game files and profile information move easily onto and off of USB media. Here’s the general process:

Insert the USB thumb drive into the old Xbox 360.
Navigate to “System Settings – > Memory”.
Choose your Hard Drive.
Select the files you want to transfer and copy them to the USB thumb drive.
Repeat this process until all your files are moved from the old Xbox to the New Xbox.
Once you have moved all your save games or all you can fit on your thumb drive, unplug the USB device and insert it into the new Xbox 360. Repeat the reverse of the above directions to copy the USB content onto the Xbox 360 HDD.

My lad's old xbox overheated and got the RRD so couldn't see how a transfer cable would work so tried to get the data over by taking the hard drive off the old xbox, dismantling the case, buying a slimline case off Amazon, and fitting the hard drive inside.
However when I fitted it into the slimline, no data had transfered.
All I gained was the memory capacity.

My Xbox died I bought a chep 2nd hand Arcade one and just plugged the old hard drive in.

Everything is there, however it no longer automatically selects my profile, and I have to be online to play my games.

There seems to be an xbox "cloud" now, can you transfer data to it?

The disc is there to ensure you're not copying games (install the game then sell the disc on). The option to pre-load the game data on to your XBox hard drive only exists to speed up loading times, as it's always going to be much faster to load game data (textures, sound effects, level data, 3D objects, etc) off a hard disc than it is to load off a DVD (or a Blu-Ray disc in the case of the PS3).

could we just plug the old xbox back in (nothing at all wrong with it just santa needed to buy him something) plug in my external HDD, transfer the data onto my HDD. Plug the new slimline xbox in, plug the External HDD in and transfer the data like that??

sounds too simple so assume it wont work this way.
btw we dont intend to get this flashed or anything, my brother does them so could get it done free but never felt the need

Sounds reasonable to me - that's how I upgraded my PS3 from a 60 GB hard drive to a 640 GB hard drive. I'd assume the process is similar for an XBox but I have to say I've never owned one.

Don't flash or chip your XBox - if Microsoft detects this (and they can), they can ban your console from the XBox Live network permanently - replacing the hard drive does nothing to resolve this. Beware when buying used XBox 360s from eBay - some of them are dirt cheap for that reason...

The games may be expensive when new, but wait a month or two after initial release and check the "Pre-Owned" sections of Game / GameStation / HMV and you'll find the nearly-new titles in there for a good bit less than they were when they were new. The perma-ban you can get for copying games just isn't worth it.

What highlander said. They can brick the console, not chipping it is a good move.

I'm waiting on the Skyrim coming down in price pre-owned.

Some great games can be had for cheap, £5 to £10 titles like PGR4, Forza 3, Fallout 3, Bioshock, Oblivion, F1 2010

I bought Skyrim for PS3 and PC on the day of release - £35 in ASDA for the PS3 version, £35 on Steam for the PC version. Very few games will make me want to part with the cash, but I know the Elder Scrolls games always represent fantastic value for money - literally hundreds of hours of game time, almost endless replay value, and in the case of the PC version, more mods than you'll find in any Halfords...

I only bought it on the PS3 because my step-son wanted to play it and his PC is a fetid pile of dingos kidneys.

tbh we dont really believe in trying to 'cheat the system' he's the last of 4 children and all have had various master systems etc up to the latest xbox being just an update(he dont like the ps3) and wii.Its all the more exciting to get a new game when you've had to save/wait for it to come out.
That said i dont have any issues with others doing it, your life live it how you want but like i said for us thats not an option

I remember the days when N64 games were £60. You really did have to save your pocket money for months to get a game!

The PSers had it easy, a mod chip and they could rent a game and copy it in a CD Burner (which in them days weren't that common).

The reason I use the XBox for games is because I got sick of constantly spending a fortune on computer gear to play the latest games. Now I spend a couple hundred quid on a console and it should be guaranteed to play games for years.

About 5 years ago I built my current gaming rig:

- Gigabyte motherboard
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor
- Zotac nVidia GTX 260 graphics card (was originally a GeForce 8600 but upgraded in 2009/2010)
- 4GB DDR2 RAM (was originally 2GB but upgraded in 2009)

I spent about £350 - £400 on that lot; that's about as much as a PS3 or XBox 360 cost when they were new. I've just spend £450 on a replacement system and I fully expect it to last another 5 years before it gets too slow for that generation of games. Skyrim works well on my old system, but not at full detail settings - and I'm a compulsive modder (download gigabytes of enhanced high-res textures and high-detail model replacement packs, etc), which means I need a system with some serious horsepower.

I only got my PS3 because it was free with a mobile phone contract I took out - free deals can be awesome :) So glad I did though; Gran Turismo 5 alone is worth it, and I'm totally into the Assassin's Creed series too.

I spent about that on a workhorse machine, got a triple core AMD processor, 2gb ram etc. not exactly a gaming rig but a good sized HDD.

PCs can be moneypits trying to keep up.
