Battery Advice Required

Hello there, the battery in my 406 2.0 HDI is needing replaced, have looked at different ones on web sites but don't know which is the best type to buy.
The existing battery was a Varta 12V L2 400/640 A (EN)
I'm assuming the bigger the numbers the better, any advice on which battery to buy would be much appreciated.

the higher the CCA (cold cranking amps) the better ....

as for make. any make really from motor factors. all batterys seem to come with a good guarantee these days .

anyway when i buy my next battery it will be a bosch . 5 year guarantee with some of their big batterys for around £80

strange things batterys
you can go for the biggest you can afford and that will fit in the space,or you can fit the smallest cheapest you can find and both will work!
the main diffrence is in the cranking power eg how long it will turn the engine over before the battery dies.if your car is well maintained and a easy starter and you dont try to start it at -10 you will get away with a small one[unless you have a massive sound system and 45 spot lights]
i would go for a medium size one with a good warranty eg halfords even better if you have a trade card.

This one will be fine ebay 220880405380,i bought one and it is a good buy at that price and a damn good battery it is fine for an HDI,if you go larger you won't get it in the battery box.

i changed my battery about 2months ago the battery i took off was the 1 on the car wen it was brand new and that was a bosch so that means it was nearly 14 years old i changed it with 1 from car spares it was bout 65pound with my trade and was ment to be better then the 1 i took off

i use Gm batterys,

yeah iknow there for vauxhalls,
but they last years and they have the Green light too show you there in good condition,

My old 406 had one on and it never missed abeat, even in the frosty cold weather,

I will have to get a new one too next month as mine is sluggish to start. They stock unipart at work and with staff discount I can get one for £25, think its rated at 540 CCA which hopefully should be fine. I reckon the one fitted is probably the original one too!

Be careful not to over-tighten the rods that hold the battery down as they have plastic lugs at the bottom and can snap off leaving the battery to fend for itself (this happened to me although I fashioned a very nifty arrangement with tie-wraps in the end ).

Funny enough one of my problems with my new 406 is the battery, i'm charging it at the moment but if it lets me down again i may go for the bosch one on ebay it's the same price i been quoted local and the warranty is more... i presume the local one is their cheap make too.

The bosch one seems good,i sold the car to my next door neighbour with the bosch battery on and it seems to spin the car over o.k. in this cold weather.
