Welcome along!

The 1.8 petrol is a solid lump - though it lacks power.

Get it serviced every year and keep an eye on the cambelt change period (change the cambelt, tensioners, and the water pump every 80,000 miles or 8 years, whichever comes first) - if the cambelt snaps, it will ruin your whole day. If you keep on top of the routine maintenance, that engine will probably outlive you. Engine-wise, I had no problems at all with my 1.8 petrol (did have a couple of minor electrical gremlins though - one electric window stopped working, and I had a problem with the brake fluid level sensor).

I had the LX trim on my saloon, which is lower than your Rapier - mine didn't have alloy wheels or front fog lamps or a CD player - plus it had grey cloth seats instead of the nicer black cloth seats in the Rapier.

Sadly my 1.8 was trashed by White Van Man more than a year ago now, and I've moved on to the superb 2.2 petrol engine 406 Coupe.

I think a petrol 406 makes a good choice (if you don't do many miles) because they normally have lower mileage and will be in good condition, and the engines are simple and won't need much spending on them.

They will also withstand a fair amount of neglect in that you can drag out the oil changes etc with no ill effects [/welly's guide #4 to keeping your motor running sweet  ]

was the 405 and 306 diesels ? whats making you look for a 2.0 diesel (HDi) ..... ?

not thought of looking for a 1.9 or a 2.1 older diesel (XUD) ... ?

The 405 was petrol not sure of the engine size I was 20 and didn't really take any interest( preferred motorbikes) and then I had the 306 1.9lx dt. They never let me down.
Not sure why a 2.0(Hdi) really lol.
I just can't believe how nice they are to drive and comfortable( just wish it was diesel).
