607 2.2 HDi SE

Probably going to upset people but i don't like the look of 607,the front is o.k.ish but the back seems like they ran out of enthusiasm by the time they got there,perhaps with bigger wheels they'd look a bit better but in my mind they look a bit "barge"ish a bit like the old Audi A8.Theres no doubt there probably a very comfortable and capable car but i'd rather have a late 406.Do they have folding rear seats? because although they have a big boot you will really notice the difference from the estate trying to get long or awkward loads in as i have done with my 5 Series,that has a big boot but is sometimes very limited what i can carry in it but you can always get roofbars i suppose,anyway thats just my opinion on the 607 you've got to see how many boxes it ticks for you in the end really.

Over here it got mated to a 6 speed in late C5s (2004 on) & the 607 manuals. There were rumours at launch that we'd get the 607 with the 2.7 HDi, but it never happened. The late spec 170bhp 2.2 was probably good enough though - but well out of my price range. Did always fancy an auto if I was going to get a 607, but bearing in mind how good the French are at making auto boxes...

Well, it's a pity it's not the biturbo.
However the new auto on the 2.2HDi of the 508 GT seems very good, though still torque converter

I see your point there about the back end, but the big wheels do make it look proportionally better. It's a little like the late 80s/early 90s Vauxhall Carltons in that way. The rear seats do fold in them, as they do in most saloons. I know from my experience with Beemers & Mercs that you don't find many with folding rear seats. It's a very rare option on an E39 & not even an easy retrofit as there is a metal bulkhead behind the seats.

I remember we went in my E39 to pickup a large tv and although the boot was large enough the floor to parcel shelf wasn't tall enough and it wouldn't even have helped if the seats had folded,the back doors did'nt open wide enough so i hd to recline the front seats right down and feed it onto the back seats through the front,not ideal.Having had saloons yourself you will know how limited you are sometimes.Perhaps a 607 estate would have been a good idea as most other car makers do estate versions of there prestige stuff,i never got my head around why Peugeot never made a 406 hatch as i think it would have been a good seller.

A 52-plate should be no problem to de-FAP - haven't actually done one, but I have had successes with C5's 307's etc, so no reason to belive it would be an issue.

There is some prospect, (but by no means any gaurantee), that we may be able to remap other (non-406) 2.2 HDi's soon.....

So it looks like there are three 2.0 HDis (manual): 110 pre- and (very briefly) post-facelift, and 136.
In the 2005 face-lift it got 100kg heavier.

There appear to be four varieties of 2.2 with manual gearbox: 136 (5-speed), 136 (6-speed), 136 (facelift), and 170.

They're 170kg to 270kg heavier than a 406, so that's like having two to four extra people in the car.

They do look really really lovely both inside and out but I think that, to be sensible, for me they're just too big

They are absolutely huge, but the main place where I want some extra room at the moment is in the rear seats for the little man. Wife had a look earlier, but we didn't get chance to drive it as the guy was out all day - we just drove round his way so she could see it. Really likes the look of it, but as she always says, "a car's a car. Get it if you want it."

Really not sure though as it is huge. Parked the estate next to it & the 607 is longer & a fair bit wider. Other issue is insurance. My initial assessment of £100 is based on when I was looking a few months ago. Did another confused.com quote today & the 607 will cost £575 a year to insure whereas the 406 is £380 & a 2.2 C5 is only £370.

Thing is though, the C5 doesn't have any more rear legroom than the C5 & even the old E39 5 Series didn't have as much space back there as this 607.

igot Quoted £1700 to insure a 607 thats the only reason ididnt buy one,
people can Mock them all they want but, what Else comes fully loaded as standard like the 607
you couidnt get bored with one, i,dont think,

I used to - 6 months was a fairly good stretch for a car with me. 406 has lasted over 2 years so far. Used to think I wasted a lot of money where I kept having to change, but I've spent a bloody fortune keeping the 406.

ipicked up a 406 estate afew weeks ago,
Total lemon , so it got sold on to a breaker,

still got the picasso, same again (big lemmon,) too many faults so iwont sell that on itl go on the scales,
got a 09 puggy 1.6 hdi expert, mpv wanabee thing, good motor but its too small and clostrophobic,

Something about the 607's which is mighty unappealing. The combination of a large FWD chassis and long wheel base makes for a dynamic catastrophe!

If you want luxury on the cheap - go for a XM ;)

If you want luxury on the cheap - go for a XM ;)

I do like the XM as the hatchback boot is more practical & the estates are huge, but I'd really struggle to get a decent one that I could put my number plate on (post 2000). Drove a 2.0 turbo one a few years ago & thought it was fantastic. A 2.5 or 2.1 TD would be right up my street.

Not many of them left any more & they're starting to appreciate in value as they're approaching the rarity level that almost makes them a classic.

XM's are not a "pipe and slippers car" - they are for cool people who have an appreciation of design and a patience for hydraulic leaks!

I'd love a V6 Exclusive 24v Manual - preferably in jet black!
