Rear shelf speakers?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Rear shelf speakers?

Post by Bailes1992 »

I know they are 6x9's, but why do people have such issue changing them?
Is it a case of no clearence at the top, underneath etc?
I want to change my back speakers, wondering if I would be better off getting a 6x9 to 6.5" adaptor plate and running 10cm components in the rear like up front?

Cheers, Bailes.

sam the 406 6x9 is not same as a standard aftermarket 6x9. the 406 have a plastic bracket around them and a very small magnet.
aftermarket magnets are huge and the mounting depth is a lot deeper

i definately wouldnt put 6.5s in the back. simple reason. 6.5s cannot produce the same midrange sound that 6x9s can ... so you will loose mid range sound. not good.

anyway this is how i did it. i bolted mdf to the shelf so that i had somewere to then bolt the 6x9 too... it fits good but the magnets use to sit on the rear shelf underneith

Hmm...
I want to keep the speakers hidden, out of view.
So the only issue is the magnet?

Whats wrong with 10cm speakers? Always was told 6x9's were a waste of time?
Also bare in mind I have a 5 chanell JBL AMP and a 250rms sealed JBL sub.
I've always run a set of JBL GTO 627's up front and standard speakers in the back, but I'd like to replace the rears now.

Had a little think about it, going to buy a JBL 4 channel amp. (I like JBL gear  )
They do a couple of sets of 6x9's that have pure black grills with just a little jbl in the corner. I think they would look very OEM personally.
Then run my front JBL GTO627's and the JBL 6x9's off the 4 channel amp.

Only thing is, I don't like the way Gary's bolts show at the top, so going to have to think something through. Maybe a carpeted 'cap' to put over them?

as stated above sam :cheesy:

10cm speakers cant produce the same mid range sound that a 6x9 can .... on an amp or not 8)

the perfect setup for a 406 would be 6.5inch front component speakers. 6x9s in rear and a sub ... everything run off amplifier ...

when you start adding subs you need to amplify the music speakers (components & 6x9s) because they cant keep up with the subs running off a standard head unit

Given up on any ford of aftermarket car audio now.
Bought connects2 looms and plates, the plate is about 2mm too thin so the climate control overhands by about 1mm either side. Then the loom simply dosen't fit without dismantling the dash to pull it all into the footwell, then I had trouble getting all the speakers to work because the connects 2 loom is shite.
Got it all working after 2 hours and just ripped it all otu and going to get a refund.

I may change the front and rear speakers in the future. But for now, going to think about getting a parrot for handsfree instead. Then might get a thingymabob that I can plug my ipod into but makes the OEM radio think it's a CD autochanger.
Keep it all OEM and simple then.

Changing the front speakers takes just a few minutes, I did a thread about the rear ones too. You can buy shallow fit 6x9's from Alpine that should fit, think they were between £40 & 50 quid.

Or you can do this > viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7723&p=75989

I didn't want 6x9's in there because I only wanted lower range frequencies (I think I limited it to 250-ish Hz) and the tweeters on 6x9's make high frequencies sound saturated in my ears.
