Trip computer

Post by scotty73 »

Being new to the 406 i'm also new to the trip computer and have kept a close eye on the mpg over the last month but whats the proper way to use it?
Do i trip it every fill up? before a decent length journey? every journey or just leave it as it is?
I've had lovely readings like 58mpg and more on a long journey i've also had about 27mpg while towing but mostly the car does trips of about 4 miles i'm just not sure whats best, any suggestions?.... Oh and how do i stop the blowers coming on auto? diesels to expensive to waste more using the aircon.

On the subject of fuel consumption with and without aircon, manufacturers stated mpg's are usually slightly higher for non aircon models.
The way I understand it aircon steals some of your horse power therefore you have to push the throttle pedal a little further/ burn more fuel to reach a set speed with it turned on.
My GLX was generally as slow as a slow thing but it did have a noticeable power boost if you turned the aircon off.

Having said all that leaving windows rolled down etc creating more drag will have a greater effect on mpg's than turning the aircon on on a hot day so it's more fuel efficient to turn it on than roll the window down.

To answer the question about turning it off, on a D8 press the ac button once it comes on permanantly, press it again you get 'ac eco' which is off permanantly. Hope that helps. My D8 always reset to auto when I turned the engine off, but then again it was a bit of a shed

I reset mine every time I fill up. The average MPG figure usually under reads by about 6mpg :D

My climate control switches the A/C on as and when it feels like.

The A/C will only use engine power when the clutch in the compressor is engaged!

On a boiling hot day in a traffic jam, the air con will still keep you cool when the car isn't moving. I never used to bother with it, but when my little boy came along I started to appreciate the benefits.

Thing is in the winter you loose around 5mpg anyway, cold air has more oxygen so the engine injects more fuel to compensate.

Now in the summer you gain that back, but stick aircon on and you've just evened it back out.

At the end of the day you only use aircon when it's warm. Mines on permenantly from April till about October, just makes the car feel fresher.
So I don't notice much difference weather I use it or not.

One of the Reasons idont use air con is,
My wife and youngest son are Chronic Asthma suffers,

i use air con once, and they where Both bad afterwards,
Air con systems can hold Virus type particles, unless its a new motor iwont use it,
and with the cost of Air con services, Having one cleaned for peace of mind is not worth the while,

...............................................................................................................................

All air conditioning systems produce condensation as a by product of their cooling action. If not used on a regular basis the condensation will stagnate and this will result in a build up of mould, mildew and fungi that in turn will lead to unpleasant odours being smelt in the cockpit.

Not only are these odours unpleasant but the bacteria present can lead to serious illness if the driver has prolonged exposure to them.

ijust leave it off,
You can buy stuff in a can, you put the aircon on recirc and you let the can off for about half hour. It kills all the bacteria in the aircon system. Had to do it in the Focus, it had not been used tidy in 8 years, it STUNK!

Move to Australia - where the cabin temps in the car often reach 70 degrees if parked in mid summer in direct sunlight! :P
