A malicious rumour started by people whose cars don't have air con I've heard it here too, but they also reckon driving along with your window open is unhealthy
It seems to cost about 2mpg for me to turn the ac on, but thats such a small difference as to be hard to say if its right or not. The mpg varries anyway dependant on many things like weather, wind, traffic etc.
But the big thing for me is to leave it on auto, and it spends most of the winter not engagaed anyway. But it will keep the interior damp free if you use it. Did this the other day. Turned it off for a bit and watched the car steam up from the back to the front. Turned it on and watched it clear. Now with modern electronics I think it can only be a good thing to leave it on and keep your highly expensive BSI free from the damp.
The expensive bit seems to be the maintaining it, not using it. Bits like the condensor are wearing out regardless of if its on or off.
Having had cars with and without ac, give me the ac any day.

Doesn't always do it on my car (same with the old saloon) - I think it's part of the climate control system; it will put the A/C on in certain conditions automatically.

As I usually have the exterior ashtray open or window as some people call it, I used to turn the AC off on my old car, as my new car doesn't have AC I'll just pop the sun roof when it gets warmer !!

We went to Woburn Zoo years back and when we went into the lion enclosure it was really busy, and some car at the front was going really slowly - much slower than you'd expect - and it was about 30 C that day, and obviously you can't open a window, so we just fried in the car for around the hour and a half it took to get through
Ever since then I swore i'd never have a car without Aircon
I've seen that A/C cleanser, I think it was an Autoglym product?
