Bought my 5th 406 on Sunday.....

Post by nutski »

Luckily i only have 2 currently!

Decided to get rid of the girlfriends 307 as its got a few gremilns that i just do not want to invest the money into, went for a cross country trip on Sunday and picked up an 03 2.2 HDi SE Estate, needs a little TLC but nothing major from what i can see, was in limp mode when i took it for a test drive so pointed this out (had already been told additive was low, dealer tried telling me you don't need it refilled!!), did some bartering and got 20% off as i insisted it would be painful driving 150 miles in limp mode!
Took it up the road and stuck it on Peugeot Planet and cleared down the faults and had no issues driving home!
DeFAP and service is happening at the weekend so hopefully after this it will be totally fine, then i have the decision on if i take the Coupe or the Estate to work!

There was no question for me  V6 powah all the way
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I had a chuckle when i started reading your thread about getting one as i knew a bit of your previous car history of 406's, i saw plenty of HDi 90's but thats the engine the 307 has, told my missus i'm not having another one, 110bhp minimum but i couldn't pass up the 2.2 :)

I had:

97 2.1 TD Saloon Exec (was a dog, engine was never right unfortunately)
01 HDi 110 GTX (my dad now has it!)
97 3.0 V6 S Coupe
02 HDi 2.2 SE Coupe

I forgot how comfy and 'floaty' the non-coupes were!
Only paid £1200 with 128k on the clock so quite happy with that!

I would love a V6 again but i do over 1000 miles a month easily, the Coupe is now pushing on for supposedly 200BHP with everything that has been done to it and the economy is great, got 45.9mpg on Sunday with 300 mile trip to get the estate, and i still have a few things to sort on the vacuum system!

The 2.2 petrol is a good half-way house between the 2.0 petrol and the 3.0 V6 - a nice 160 HP (with 160 ft/lbs torque) that gives pretty decent fuel economy to boot. And a decently growly soundtrack too - not quite V6 nice, but it has a nice snarl to it, especially with a well-built stainless exhaust system fitted.
2002 (D9) Peugeot 406 Coupe SE, 2.2 litre Petrol. Scarlet Red/Rouge Ecarlate/Rosso Scarlatto. Black Leather interior. SOLD :(
2008 (E60 LCI) BMW 525i M-Sport, 3.0 litre Petrol. Carbonschwarz Metallic. Black Dakota Leather and Myrtlewood interior.

The 2.2 Petrol is a nice compromise but also seems a bit of a rarity to pick up a good one, out of interest what kind of mileage does yours return?

I do really think it would have to be ES9J4S, decat, remap, BMC CDA with a Nivek scoop and stainless exhaust, supposedly gives a really modest performance increase, i do have permission from SWMBO thats if i get a local job again i can change my car for pretty much what i like engine-wise, which is a good reason for me to keep the second car as something practical and economical :)

Well done young man! (I still plan to swap mine for a lower mileage example, when it gets cheap enough). 8)
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

In Coupe form, yes - less than 4,000 of them worldwide were fitted with the EW12 J4 engine. You can find the same engine in the 406 SRi saloons and estates, too - I have no idea how many there were of these though, but I suspect there were more of them than there were Coupes.

On a long motorway run, I get between 37 and 42 MPG. If I sit in 5th gear doing 40 MPH, I've seen the trip computer tell me I'm doing 42 - 60 MPG - and this isn't a quick flash up on the instant read-out; this is sustained! Drive smoothly and use the accelerator sparingly, and she'll give you a lot of miles to the gallon. It's a great engine for this type of car - fun when you stomp the loud pedal, refined and frugal when you're on a long trip.

Thats not bad at all, the problem is i would be too tempted to use the loud pedal!
I'm actually taking it easy in the coupe at the moment to return over 40mpg, need to replace a diaphragm and check the vacuum system, if i'm not worried about mpg then it flies!
I really miss my remapped saloon, did not matter how hard i drove it, i could not return under 42mpg, on a decent trip i used to get 53.3mpg
