I'm having trouble eliminating rear sway on my D8. Over 50mph it starts feeling dangerous. So far I've changed everything circled blue. There is no real play in the rear wheel anymore, and no knocking sounds. The car is lowered 40mm.
My question is - can the bushes within the red circles be the problem?
The bush circled in orange looks a bit bad, but there is no movement at all, so I'm hesitant to change this without being sure. It's only available from the dealer at about the same price as everything else in the rear suspension combined
I'd replace the ARB bushes (circled no 3 in your first pic) as a matter of course; also the ARB drop links (no 5 in first pic).

When you say its "starts to feel dangerous"? When I bought my own 406 it had a worrying amount of sway on the rear. Both upper stab links shot(now fixed), four fairly large and important bushes shot (shortly going to fix) and when i fixed upper stab link any sway almost dissapeared so it appears the bushes that are gone on mine are'nt really causing any sway worth talking about only clunking noises (by the way both my number 17 bushes are shot at the moment).
In my humble experience if bushes are shot you should hear and feel strong thudding/clunking sounds when over rough ground.....but you dont have any you say?
If theres no movement in the wheel and youve recently changed the upper stab arms and still as bad as you say it is, I would be thinking something other than a few bushes.............what kind of tyres have you on the back?...........any chance someone botched the suspension job.....whens the last time you got four wheel alignment done?
hi mate may i ask what size tyres have u got and what make

@Teamster1975: The ARB bushes and drops are already ordered, should arrive this week. Could this cause my rear sway?
@Gary406: I did the lowering myself; springs and shocks are all good at the rear. The car was fine for half a year or so after I did the lowering job.
@Keppler, midsmike: Tyres are Bridgestone 15's, I've had them checked. I have not had a 4 wheel alignment done at all. Should I start there? I'm still thinking a faulty part somewhere, the car is a '96 and has covered almost 200k miles (308 km). Most bushes back there were either gone or about to go.
the only reason i ask is because i had the same problem and it was the tyres they had alot of sidewall flex

Well bridgestone 15's are what I have on my 406 and they're doing fine. If the camber is out on the rear you should be getting tyres that are badly worn on one side, however if all the bush's are as bad as you say they are then they would most likely cause the same thing, especially if no 17 and 7 are shot. Also this would mean there would be no point in doing allignment until you've replaced them.
If it were me id be looking at whats obvious and begin by replacing all those bush's first, honestly if number 7 is'nt gone then there not what id call major work for someone with a press and impact gun. If no.7 is shot then it can be a bit of a nightmare (complete dismantling of rear hub )
But again, i fixed my bush's yesterday and to my horror we found one no. 7 gone and yet still there was no sway on mine worth talking about, only clunking sounds. If and when you do the bushes and the problem isnt sorted id be strongly suspecting the lowering of sus.
Note: Sorry I missed the part where you said the car drove fine for a year when lowered!

The tyres look fine to me, also took a look at the summer tyres and they look evenly worn as well. I got more bushes today, I'll change them during the weekend. Thanks for your help so far:)
Btw #7 is quite an easy job as well, I think I used about half an hour once I had the right tool. I actually borrowed the tool from pug dealer, easy stuff:) Didnt have to dismantle anything.
If you have access to tools from peugeot then im sure thats makes things very easy indeed . I had only a 20 ton press which meant the whole drum brake had to be dismantled and hub itself detached and brought over to the press. Any ways good luck with your problem i hope bushes sorts it out
