I rather thought that was the point - from engineer to mince in 0.0 seconds...

Aren't those blades made out of titanium and hideously expensive? :?

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Apparently the CFM56-7B engine has a 61-inch diameter solid titanium wide-chord fan disk.

Not sure exactly which model of CFM56 is fitted to Continental's 737-500 jets; I think it's one of the CFM56-3 series, but as far as I can tell through reading various websites, the only difference between the fan disk on the early (-2, -3, -5A, -5B and -5C) models and the latest model (-7B) seems to be the number of fan blades on the disk - 44 blades on earlier models and 24 blades on the -7B versions.
