got a handbook? I think it explains it all in there.
The service interval warning will come up everytime you go to start the car. Then basically after that the spanner and warning starts to appear more regularly as it becomes due for a service
the volvo ones do that and they also take into account the time the car has been driven, but they can be a bit stupid, have known some to come on weeks, even days after being serviced

The BMW Compact tds what 'her indoors' drives has not been serviced since Sept 2005, although it has only done 7000 miles in that time, and it still has 2 yellow bars left on the indicator
Goes against the grain a bit with me as I am usually a bit 'Anal' about oil changes but I am going to go along with the BMW until it screams INSPECTION I or II at me.
A lot of BMW drivers report that their car is actually cheaper to maintain than a Ford/Vauxhall in fact What Car did a long term test and proved it. Obviously the way you drive helps to extend the intervals too, and of course a BMW will be worth more due to lower depreciation.
