squeek and whirr !!!!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

squeek and whirr !!!!

Post by cliffk »

I dont know if this is the proper location for this question but I cant think where else to put it.

Just really statred using my recently aquired 2003 406 hdi estate I have noticed when I stop and switch off there is a squeeking noise like something rotating this goes on for about a minute and what ever it is appears to speed up and the noise then becomes a whirring noise until it finally stops.
It seems to be coming from the rear view mirror / interior light area any ideas ???

I think there is a little fan up there that works with the climate control,it sucks air up through a sensor which controls the temp in the car,i think!

Yes, the air sampler unit. It pulls in cabin air and measures the temperature and the humidity, and passes it to the climate control system.

I almost never hear mine; I think they're supposed to be nearly silent (correct me if I'm wrong folks) - replacing it or cleaning it out might be a good idea, but I'm not 100% sure on how to get in to it.

My old 306 had a fan there and it was noisy,i dropped the interior light assembly down and managed to get to the fan and it was filthy,i gently brushed it with a soft paintbrush and it did quiet it down a bit and the heating in the car worked better aswell as the sensor was filthy too.

Carefully lever the main courtesy light out, then undo the two torx screws behind it to free the console. Cleaning up the fan may help the noise, but you might be better off just grabbing a new console from ebay for a couple of quid
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
