I've booked my car next week for MOT, service and cambelt replacement incl. water pump. The blokey said it costs £200 for the cambelt + extra £40 for the water pump. Not sure about the bottom pulley - he didn't seem to mention it. + MOT and service another £100. Does this sound like a good price?

I COULD do the service myself, but with rain and having no garage kinda restricts my options. Plus with some people moaning about getting oil filters off and having oil slicks on their drives doesn't help the choices!

Its worth noting there was only £12 differance between a genuine and non -genuine water pump!!
I was quite suprised. Its def worth paying the extra .

Yes, my hand is healing up nicely now thank you.

I got the filter tightness just right when I finished (so I could back it off again by hand) and within a week it's gone fecking solid again........*looks forward to next oil change*

Anyway, should you not have done all that stuff BEFORE you went Cruzin :?

I should have but I didn't have any money. In fact I still don't, but I am getting it done on pay day :)

Well i had the garage replace the belt+ tensioners and water pump. Well chuffed cos the car now sounds so quiet and runs better than ever. Also they only charged me 3 hours labour as apposed to 4.5 as they quoted. So total price of job was £220 inc and this was also using a genuine water pump and dayco belt kit.

I am new to the board and wondering if anyone can recommend a good mechanic in Lancashire? Just got a 99V 2.0HDi GLX 90 (Navy Blue) and need the timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, water pump, bottom pulley, aux belt etc.

Thanks,
Paul

Ah, this old topic rears its ugly head again.

All of you guys are quoting £200-300 for this job.

Now, it's probably a more difficult job, hence taking more hours, on a V6, but when I had this done, plus (basic) service, plus change of radiator, I paid... wait for it (at a main stealer)... £870!!!

And I don't think they even changed the water pump...

As someone said, a good, trustworthy mechanic is worth his weight in gold... I am yet to find one though... :|

thanks welton, i am quite handy with my tools, and not scared of undertaking a job, but, changing the exhaust and brake shoes are one thing, and changing a timing belt another... probably too complex. especially without a manual - haynes never made one for a v6... :?

Hello again,
I'm not complaining about price, i've budgeted a certain amount and sourced the best parts prices myself, this includes timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, aux belt, bottom pulley, water pump, antifreeze, water.

I'm looking for a recommendation for a good mechanic who won't charge the earth yet will be able to do the job without breaking most of the under bonnet plastics and leaving bolts out etc. I don't trust the main stealer as they're all apprentices.

I'd consider undertaking it but I need a proper receipt for warranty purposes.

Thanks,
Paul

pfft id prefer to pay someone to change an exhaust and do the timing belt myself, exhaust always has shitty rust bolts and causes you to curse no end,
timing belt is just line up the marks,
pin the pulleys undo tensioner,
off with old belt,
4/5 bolts for water pump clean up gasket new pump in,
remove tensioner put new one on,
Put new belt on tighten up roughly with tensioner,
remove locking pins,
spin engine by hand 3-4 times,
check pins locate if not remove belt and reset.
check belt tension making sure you can turn 1/4 >1/2 on its longest lenth

job done

its not rocket science just fitting an elastic band around some wheels :P

although i imagine the v6 is a bit more complicated it still cant be that bad :P

thats because fiat dealers are just pathetic and dont want the job

never done an alfa v6, volvo 360 2.0 can be a bit akward too, easy enough cambelt to change just sod all room
