I wouldn't want an end to free to good home ad's I've got some pets that way, its knowing that they are going to a good home. Thats sick that a dog would be treated in such a way.

It's difficult. We had to rehome a cavalier when my son was a toddler but were lucky enough to find a good home by word of mouth. Guy that took her had lost his wife and dog recently and doted on ours. She was spoiled rotten to the age of 15. Maybe we were lucky, but we went to see the guy first. When our delightful hound crapped on his immaculate hall carpet, he told us not to worry  His only concern was if we would change our minds and ask for her back.

I have been toying this idea (rehoming not getting into bloodsport) but i got so much other shite going on i've dealt with it another way.

Whats happening is my 18 month merle boarder collie bit my 10 year old daughter while i was having my dinner, we're thinking it could be a number of things.

1- is sort of my fault he sits so patiently for me hoping for a sample of what i'm eating and my daughter being the pack youngster (me being pack leader) and him being territorial by bread he went for her.

2- he's put a bit of beef on over the winter i thought it was winter coat, vet advised diet for lard arse  so we cut him down and maybe he's getting scared he might lose out on some chicken to here... what do you do? fat dog, dead kid or re-homing?

My solution at the moment is to put him in his cage when anyones eating, and i know the re-homing would devastate us all after losing our heinz 57 two years ago.

Keeping them away whilst eating is always a good idea, dogs do tend to beg once they know they have a potential freebie so to speak.

Also the dog does need to know that they are bottom of the leader pack so to speak, imagine if your daughter takes him out when she is older, will he respond to her? It needs to know that going for a child isnt on, even if there is potential for food.

I dont think that I could ever give away my 20 month old collie Jack, he is too much a part of the family.... Would make sacrifices of my own before he had to go, and if he did I would be only know of 2 people that i would give him to and thats my parents who have his sister!

the answer to that is plain and simple, Go out and buy a boxer Muzzle,
Muzzle the dog when its around young children,

the dog carnt talk to you so you will never know what its problem is, if its bitten once itl do it again,

Sounds cruel but , Cover your back and safe guard your children Muzzle it,

once theres just adults around take the muzzle off,
feed it in its own area,

Sometimes collies can snap, mine has bit the cousin and almost bit me but it was when playing fetch with a stick he gets overly excited and snapped the stick while it was still being held, as soon as he realised what he had done he put the head down and had a sorry look on his face.
But now he is 10 it doesn't happen he just sort of learnt to keep a distance when playing fetch, in the case of your dog if food was waved at it the dog may have snapped for it and got the hand aswell.

I've got a muzzle here i bought it when he was younger for a few reasons... 1. being vet visits 2. it has a brilliant effect at calming them down and 3 was holidays he's always muzzled in the car when the kids are with us and it came in handy if we went to a clubhouse for a sneaky pint :supafrisk: i make sure he's safe in his cage in the caravan at winter or awning in the summer.

Fair play he's had some money spent on him in 18 months what with accesories and expensive vet bills... any of you heard of pirexia in collies? he often runs a high temp and feels very sorry for himself... £800 so far thank fook i insured him....will have to post a pic of the not so little poser.

ive only seen that in cattle, didnt think dogs got it,

Vet bills?

ive spent around 2grand in the last 3 years on vet bills, pet plan for my dog is more expensive than car insurance, not an option, :(
