Yeah pet insurance is ok, for ordinary dogs, if theyve been in the Racing industry, they want Mega bucks to insure them,

Pet insurance seems very expensive, the vets know how the charge, its no wonder they drive about in a fleet of new land rover freelanders round here. Though out here they mainly deal with cattle, the dogs are still expensive to sort out, the only thing that urgently needed done was the dog come running to me one day with a cut up the side of his face to the corner of they eye, the eye was not affected thankfully but the vet charged £70 for the stitching.

Bloody hell thats bonkers but i supose their prone to muscular injuries? am i right in thinking petplan is unlimited too? mine with esure is for £7000 per injury or ilness.

They just sent my aplication to an insurance company, Lv ithink it was,
got the call back with the offer, which ihad to decline, £180 amonth or what ever it was, was not an option,

pet plan them selves wouidnt fully cover, vet fees,
and if it was stolen theyd only pay for 30% of advertising,

igave up with it in the end,
found a vet localy thatl take knock a few quid off the bills if goes under the counter, so its not too bad,

As of the dog, its as good as rug, he sits infront of the gas fire all day

I have been toying this idea (rehoming not getting into bloodsport) but i got so much other shite going on i've dealt with it another way.

Whats happening is my 18 month merle boarder collie bit my 10 year old daughter while i was having my dinner, we're thinking it could be a number of things.

1- is sort of my fault he sits so patiently for me hoping for a sample of what i'm eating and my daughter being the pack youngster (me being pack leader) and him being territorial by bread he went for her.

2- he's put a bit of beef on over the winter i thought it was winter coat, vet advised diet for lard arse so we cut him down and maybe he's getting scared he might lose out on some chicken to here... what do you do? fat dog, dead kid or re-homing?

My solution at the moment is to put him in his cage when anyones eating, and i know the re-homing would devastate us all after losing our heinz 57 two years ago.

I agree with Lozz any dog is a potential biter or killer my Russell has been brought up with kids .I let them feed her by hand which in my mind builds up a good relationship .But saying that even though she has never shown any aggression towards the kids or myself if she did she would be PTS

I have 2 Border Terriers, 1 OK 1 not, but 100% with immediate family, he just bites anyone who isn't. Last night I had the behaviourist from the local shelter come round, could not believe the difference. She came in and totaly blanked them and they became very submissive, after 2 hours they were asleep at her feet, she explained that she was the ALPHA BITCH and therefore in charge. She taught us body language and already this morning they were different dogs when out walking. £20 an hour but well worth it. Going to take them to socialise with her pack soon. It's all about pack order and he thought he was boss and had to protect his pack.

Best people to train dogs is farmers,

if you see them at work with there dogs, youl notice the firm voice they use with there dogs,

Irember when iwas a kid the old folk used to shout to there dog, GET under, and the dog wouid go straight to its bed or go under the table,
i used to think what was all that about ,but it makes sense now,

Voice tones to make a difference with a dog. Mine could go straight to the floor as soon as you give a deep what have you done tone, but as soon as you go good boy/girl they shake like crazy and wag their tails!

And yes, a dog does need to know their place within a family, although my collie has had a hard day at work and is now KO'ed on my pillows in bed with the OH!

We are trying to de-train a dog atm,

probably sounds weird that,

but My dog wont eat until told to do so,
he will only do most things on Comand,

ive not trained him to do that, ithink a dog needs some sort of freedom or atleast to eat when it wants to
My dog was originaly trained by Americans, someone in ireland had him flown over, before we bought him
poor thing most probs spent along time in Quarantine

Bad Dog!


A man was leaving a convenience store with his morning coffee when he noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A black hearse was followed by a second black hearse about 50 Feet behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary man walking a dog on a leash. Behind him, a short distance back, were about 200 men walking single file.

The man couldn't stand the curiosity. He respectfully approached the man walking the dog and said:
"I am so sorry for your loss, and this may be a bad time to disturb you, but I've never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?"



"My wife's."



''What happened to her?"



"She yelled at me and my dog attacked and killed her."

He inquired further, "But who is in the second hearse?"

The man answered, "My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my wife when the dog turned on her."

A very poignant and touching moment of brotherhood and silence passed between the two men.

"Can I borrow the dog?"

The man replied, "Get in line."

So cruel when people give away pets due to illness and horrible things happen such as dog fighting. All my (3) dogs have been rescued but from centres. I have always had lurchers so I know what S**** condition they can be in when you get them or end up in the wrong hands. Regarding biting 18month puppy with children get an animal behavourist in to show you the pecking order and make sure that all the family do it and enforce the commands on a regular basis. All my dogs have never been allowed to the table I am top dog they need to know their place. Once they know, they settle really well as all dogs live in packs. Remember wildlife programmes if they step out of place the are put back into the pack.

My lurcher is a deerhound/beardie collie cross standing 28" to the shoulder and I'm 5FT tall. He knows his place as he is too big not too. Good luck with the training and remember you should never trust any dog with kids what ever the size.
Unfortunaltely collies can be nippy try taking him to a class where he can learn tricks say agility as they are intelligent dogs and need new tricks to keep the occupied. hope all works out XX

3 days since behaviourist came round. Difference in my dogs is amazing, they really aren't my dogs. Recall is dead easy from any distance, much more relaxed around the house, people can enter without being barked at or jumped up at. All done with body language and a clicker, no shouting or raised voices at all.
